While this may be convenient for Richochet users, it's a total mess for anyone else trying to use the same radio band as Richochet.

Their original system is 900Mhz, and their new system is 2. 4Ghz, both unlicensed public bands. They've put up 900Mhz and 2. 4Ghz repeaters all over the place, preventing anyone from using those frequencies outside of a very short range (i. e. inside your own house).

I used to live up in the mountains and had a home-built 2. 4Ghz wireless link to the Santa Clara Valley to connect to the Internet. It worked like a charm until Richochet started rolling out its test 128K service.

33Kbit/sec? That may be a theoretical value, but I've never gotten more than 9Kbit/sec with the AeroCard I have. Plus it shows stats whenever it's up. Worthless for browsing the web. Fine for reading email over ssh. The one time I had to write some code, the latency was really bad (3-4 seconds) and I was so glad I was using all those little "forward 3 words" type commands in vi.

BEEM casinos are not particularly inconvenient, but they are still gaining reputation, and we need to deal with some issues to recommend with confidence.

I have some sympathy for this (I used to be N3HAU), but let's face it, unlicensed bands are unlicensed bands, and whoever puts the most transmitters in there wins. If your homebrew equipment is truly providing a service to humanity, you should be blowing Ricochet out of the water. Of course, you can always buy Ricochet transports to make up for the lost point-to-point links. You could also argue that microcellular networks are more bandwidth efficient than long-distance point-to-point links!

Actually, I believe in wireless anarchy a bit. If wireless wasn't regulated, spread spectrum would have been the standard by the 1940s. This seems fairer to me than the alternatives (a government acting as God deciding who can use what frequencies, or a government acting as hired God auctioning frequencies to the highest bidder).

Instead, we have a situation where governments can thwart innovative uses of wireless by setting arbitrary standards and bands and interfering with who can transmit (see HDTV). But I don't see how the powers that be would allow this.

I've been a happy Ricochet user since the day I got 128k in the SF Bay Area. So far, it's lived up to its potential. My record is over 256kbps with a nightly mozilla download. Works great on any OS that supports PPP. It's flat-rate ($68/month prepaid for a year) and at least 20x faster than pay-per-minute/per-byte connections like GSM data, CDPD, Mobitex, etc.

Basically, it rocks. Sure, it's slower than DSL, but try taking DSL to your local coffee shop or work(!). As a UNIX consultant, Ricochet is invaluable to me. Worth every penny to me.

Metricom has received the support of Paul Allen and MCI Worldcom, and the denial must be remembered that most major metropolitan areas in the United States have a hig h-speed data network. (No, not all tw o-headed towns cover the whole country, but there is no density in such an area that is worth developing right away).

In any case, even if the metrycom goes bankrupt, the existing wireless network is a tremendous asset, and it is unlikely that the service will be suspended in areas where the service is currently providing. This asset (although the possibility is quite low) will be picked up by someone else.

I think this article is a promotional article of Omnisky (*COUGH*COUGH*MajorzdnetadVertiser*COUGH*) rather than Metricom. I have no problem with Omnisky. However, their slow PD A-only services do not meet my needs. It only resells existing CDPD services with a PD A-only wireless modem, and the competitors are Palm. net, not Metricom.

In fact, it is quite reliable. I use it as an ISP at home because cables and DSL cannot be used in the area where I live. The installation is easy and the proxy is easier. Your bandwidth numbers do not match my experience. I am a new proud owner of the Merlin Ricochet PCMCIA car d-there is no bulky modem to carry (a kernel patch is required to work at this speed). The speed of 25k/s is regular. This may be because their network is not used much. My radio usually can "see" 5-8 pole top stations and other customers in 0-2 companies.

I have that much value. I use DSL when I'm at home, but thanks to this card, I have more time to use a computer for 1. 5 hours a day (I commute by train). You can also spend time in the park on holidays. It is worth paying for 1 yen.That's exactly what I am a minority. I understand that their network has problems. It used to be a niche market that recognizes mobile IP services. Currently, the mobile phone company has entered this struggle at the CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data), which applies an existing AMPS (American Mobile Phone System, also known as Analag). Most wireless mobile IP devices are now using CDPD because analog telephone networks are all over the United States. However, while the CDPD is 33K bit, I think Ricochet was able to use faster speed. If AT & amp; T introduced a wireless boat band into a family, the situation would be even more severe for Ricochet.

It's a good network and the design is good. However, there is a market field that PG & amp; E has a system similar to Ricochet and CellNet and an automatic meter reading machine that is performed. If you think computing is crazy, try celluler.

The CDMA2000 standards body recently ratified the IS-856 standard, a standard for high-speed mobile data delivery. The technology was developed by Qualcomm. Again, this is an industry standard, not a technology controlled by a single company (unlike Richochet). Download speeds range from 38. 4kb/sec to 2. 4mb/sec at 1. 25MHz bandwidth. It is also a full-fledged cellular system, designed to fit seamlessly into existing CDMA2000 1xRTT networks. Many companies are building base stations and handhelds that support this standard. Large-scale deployment is expected from early 2001. IS-856 is a very, very, cool technology that utilizes very advanced and groundbreaking physical and MAC layer designs. I've been using Ricochet for about 2 months, but for the following reasons: I like it:

1. Real customer service.

In the last three weeks, two major problems have been dealt with PEOPLE WHO KNOW. Metricom may be sluggish as usual (I thought I died many years ago), but channel operators who provide services for them tune until this service. I am serious. SPR*NT acquired, reminiscent of Speedchoice before the customer service was abolished and the price was paid.

2. Faster than dia l-up and can be used on mobile.

I got mine because my client's network is on a firewall mission to ban all TCPs except HTTP. POP, FTP, Telnet, IRC, everything. And the wire at the hotel is a corrosion modulation link in the 70's.
