- Connect the USB cable directly to the computer (do not use the USB hub.) Confirm that the USB cable length is 18 inches (22 inches for My Passport players manufactured before 2007). please. If you use a USB cable longer than 18 inches, you may not be able to supply enough power to the player. Some thir d-party data cables can supply enough power to players. This includes a "coil" cable and an extension cable, even if the total length is less than 18 inches. WD RE is recommended to use the USB cable attached to the external portable drive as much as possible.

All WD external drives function as storage devices that can be used in Windows or MacOS operating systems without additional software. Some WD drives come with backup software, but you don't need to use this software to use the drive effectively on your computer.
Data can be moved or copied on a drive, whether or not there is software. The following hints explain how to identify the location of the data and copy it to an external hard disk drive. We will also explain backup creation and maintenance, regardless of whether there is a backup software.
Localisation de vos données( Photos, vidéos, musique, documents, etc. ):
- Before copying data to an external drive, you need to identify the location of the data first. The installed program may save the data in various places. If you want to back up data in the program, such as iTunes or financial software, we recommend that you contact the manufacturer or software manual to check the location of the data and the recommendation procedure for backup.
Windows usually saves data in a user interface sidebar. File Explorer folder. When you open the folder in the file Explorer, a list of documents, images, music, and video will be displayed on the left.
Another way to find a file is to use the search function built into Windows.
For information on how to use the search function, see Windows File Explore r-File and folder operation.
MacOS usually saves data from the user interface sidebar. Open the Finder. Finder window and display documents, images, music, and video lists on the left.

- The easiest way to format FAT32 disk is to use MacOS disk utility. For more information, see the following steps:
- General WD Elements format
- Most WD Elements are provided in NTFS format that is not supported by Mac by default. It is important to check the format before purchasing an external hard drive because all hard drives are not supported by both devices. Some versions can be used in FAT32 and EXFAT format widely supported by different types of operating systems and devices.
- Step 3. Format the drive
- Select the Quick Format Options and press the start button. After a while, the hard disk will be formatted according to the set format.
- Step 2. Proceed to disk utility options
- Open the "Finder" option in the Mac OS dock. Once opened, select the "Move" option from the menu bar and click Utility. Then, the application / utility will be displayed. Move to the utility option and select a disk utility application.
- Step 3. Select the hard drive you want to format
- Open a disk utility option and select the external drive you want to format a device.
- Click the Erase Options in the Disk Utility menu. A new dialog box is displayed. From here, you need to customize the format to format hard drive. You also need to define a new name for the hard drive as needed.
- Step 5. Erase the drive
- When everything is what you want, click the erasing option and format a hard drive a few seconds later.
- When an external hard drive is formatted, it is virtually impossible to restore the stored files. There are several thir d-party tools that can be easily executed. When formatting a hard disk drive, it is important to make sure that there are no important files or folders that are not backed up in the drive.
- If such a file is on an external hard drive, run a backup before formatting the hard drive. Once a format option is executed, you will not be able to restore files.

What is a backup?
"Backup" is a defined duplication of data. If the data is stored only in one place, the data set is not a backup. If you move data from a computer system to an external hard disk drive, it will not be backed up unless the file is duplicated in another storage location.
Western Digital recommends keeping important data backup. Maintaining effective backups can protect computer virus, data damage, hardware problems, or environmental dangers. Backup means that the data is stored in at least two places. Even if the data is backed up and one of the devices breaks down, the data will not be lost because the data is stored in the second place where you can access it.

Comment formater un disque dur externe WD en FAT32 ou exFAT
Western Digital external hard disk drive can be used from both Windows and Mac OSX. This is useful for using drives in both environments and moving files between two environments. Most of the WD drive is formatted in NTFS (Windows) or HFS+(MacOS) format.
In order to read and write hard drives on both PCs and Mac computers, you need to format them as EXFAT or FAT32 files. FAT32 has several restrictions, such as 4GB per file. This is a file format applied on both Mac and PC, and the only workaround is to format the drive with EXFAT. For more information about these restrictions, see the answer ID 19494, FAT32 file system and partition size limit (Windows and Mac).
The easiest way to form a disk with FAT32 or EXFAT is to use MacOS Disk Utility for FAT32 and MacOS Disk Utility or Windows Disk Management for EXFAT.
Warning: Do not connect an external drive to multiple computers at the same time. It leads to deterioration of disk partitions and damage to data on disk. |

If you try to connect an external hard drive to a Mac device, many people will hit a problem. This is due to differences in file format between Windows and Mac systems.
The question is often asked how to make WD Elements compatible with Mac so that external hard drive can be used without any problems. Having an external hard drive that is not supported by a Mac device can be a problem for experts who need to transfer files from a type of computer to another computer. Therefore, in order to maintain a smooth and unavoidable workflow, it is best to format a hard disk drive in the format that is supported by all commonly used operating systems.
Part 1. Will WD Elements run on Mac?
Partie 3. Comment récupérer des fichiers WD Elements formatés sur Mac
Part 2. How to format WD Elements for Mac
Part 3. How to recover WD files formatted on Mac
Part 4: Tips for formatting a WD element for Mac
Because they are formatted in NTFS format, by default, WD Elements' hard drive does not work on a Mac computer. This form is not supported on a Mac device, so it cannot be accessed to the drive. The difference in the format is that it is important to r e-format the hard drive in the first supported format to cause a problem with reading the hard drive and use it universally in the entire device you use. 。
Does WD Elements work on Mac?
Most of these hard drives are formatted in NTFS format supported only on Windows PCs. If you want to buy a WD element that works on the Mac, this is supported by a Mac device, so ask a retail store to provide HFS +format hard drive, or file format such as EXFAT or FAT32. Can be selected.
How to make the WD element compatible with Mac
WD ELEMENTS is a popular external hard drive, so more people prefer to buy it for its reliability. Just as Windows PCs are more popular, they are usually provided in NTFS format. Since these are supported by all devices, the only way to use these hard drive on the Mac is to r e-form them in other formats such as EXFAT or FAT32.
Due to the difference in operating systems, most external hard drives of WD Elements do not work natively on the device running Mac OS. To overcome this obstacle, you need to format a hard drive in a widely supported format. How do you ask how to r e-form the Mac WD Elements? Well, it's very easy, it can be easily done on another device so that it can be used with the cros s-platform function. There is no need for thir d-party applications so that you can do this, and the process is very easy.
It is difficult to select the best format to r e-format a hard drive. For example, the EXFAT system has an oversized partition limit, the FAT32 system is not so popular, and the Mac OS Journaled format works only on devices running the Mac OS. Therefore, you need to understand your needs to select a correct format.
If you mainly use a Mac OS device, it's best to choose a Mac OS Journaled format with almost no partition or file size limit. It is supported by Android, Windows, and Mac OS without any problems, and there is no limit to being less convenient than the NTFS system.
Depending on your system, there are two ways to format a hard disk drive Mac compatible. One is to use the native file format options on the Windows OS computer, and the other is to use a similar tool on the Mac OS. See below for how to use Windows and Mac OS-devices to format WDs for Mac items.
