Exclusive Interview PokerStars Unveil What s in Store for EPT 2024 PokerNews
Exclusive Interview: PokerStars Unveil What's in Store for EPT 2024
With less than a month until the European Poker Tour (EPT) kicks off in Paris, PokerNews spoke to Cedric Billot, Associate Director of Live Event Operations at PokerStars, about what players can expect from PokerStars Live and the EPT in 2024.
We also asked Billot about the new venue, what players can expect from the same schedule as in 2023, and what improvements the tour has made to return to Paris after apologizing for the "poor experience" at the inaugural event.
Return to Paris
In 2004-2005, the EPT visited Barcelona, London, Monte Carlo and Copenhagen.
But Paris might have been included. According to Billot, PokerStars had wanted to bring the EPT to Paris for a long time, but was thwarted by regulations. Indeed, poker in Paris has a rich history, but it has been complicated by government and police intervention at times.
In 2014, the France Poker Series (FPS) was canceled after police raided the venue.
After that, poker completely declined in the French capital, with famous "circles" or gaming clubs such as Aviation Club de France and Clichy-Montmartre closing in the 2010s. But in 2022, the EPT announced that the first event in 2023 would be held at the Hyatt Regency Paris Etoile.
Paris is the 13th European capital to host the European Poker Tour. The answer is at the bottom of the article!
"Paris is the second strongest venue after Barcelona. It's the city that everyone wants to go to.
When the decision to cancel the event was made in 2014, Bilott was president of the FPS, but from 2023 he will be responsible for the entire EPT festival, and he said that French players have always been important to the entire EPT.
"As soon as we could, we went to Paris," he told PokerNews . "French players are our number one favorite in every EPT location. From Prague to Barcelona and even London, we had more French players than British players!
"Paris is our second strongest location after Barcelona. It's the city that everyone wants to go to."
The inaugural EPT Paris event was not without its flaws, the sheer number of players caused bottlenecks at the venue, and a complicated registration system further compounded the problem. To solve these issues, PokerStars carried out a proper evaluation and analysis of the venue and came up with a number of solutions together with Club Barriere.
"We had great numbers last year," he said. "But it wasn't just the number of players that was an issue. The entrance to the venue was a nightmare, as was the logistical access to the venue.
"A temporary fix was made last year, and it eventually improved and smoothed out by the second week. But it absolutely had to change for 2024.
As a result, the festival moved to a state-of-the-art conference center in the heart of the city, the Palais des Congrès. The larger venue allows for more table capacity and more space overall.
Cameras and Game Security
But PokerStars isn't just investing in new venues for the EPT. With a focus on game integrity, PokerStars has increased its investment in game security. It is the only live event operator to have CCTV cameras installed, allowing it to monitor activity at each table.
"We pride ourselves on the physical security and game integrity at all our venues. "So to maintain this level of security, we've purchased state-of-the-art cameras. Each table at an EPT tournament will have its own dedicated CCTV camera.
"Our players care about the safety of their games, and PokerStars We are also working hard to ensure the safety of the game at our live events. To maintain the trust of players and operators, we need to continue to improve and invest. This is a big investment.
"This will allow us to review every hand, every play, every chip race. At first, there are security implications, but in the future, it will also be possible to stream from these cameras, because the quality of the equipment is very high."
EPT 2024 Schedule
The 2024 EPT schedule was announced in November, with the same five venues as in 2023. Billot told PokerNews that there is a simple reason for this repetitive schedule, but he also admitted that he is open to the idea of adding new venues in the future.
"If something isn't broken, why change it? If we can improve it or offer the players something different, we would like to do so.
However, according to Billot, all of this year's EPT venues are "no brainer" and not all for the same reason.
"It would be strange not to go back to Barcelona.
"Paris was very strong last year. Monte Carlo is also an incredibly powerful stop, albeit a different reason.
"Barcelona doesn't need to be explained. Barcelona doesn't need to be explained. Because the main event of Estrelas was a record, it would be strange not to return to Barcelona. Prague was also recorded in the main and Yurika Everyone loves this tournament.
Not only Paris made the EPT debut in 2023, but also Cyprus was extremely popular with players.
"There was a highly player feedback. It was a simple decision. "
The venue has not changed for 2024, but there is a possibility that new venues will be added after 2025.
"Look at other sports. At the ATP tennis circuit, some venues are the same, and some venues go back and forth. F1 goes to a new venue like last year's Las Vegas, but always the same race. There is also.
"I haven't decided anything. I'm always paying attention to new places that are likely to be popular. I'm thinking about returning to London, Germany, the Netherlands, and I'm considering next year."
Crafting Unforgettable Live Experiences
Many people have evaluated the live events provided by Pokerstars as the industry's top class, including not only events, ba y-in and venues, but also players during the event.
Billot says this is due to the spirit of perfectionism, and Pokerstars is constantly improving. From the introduction of power passes to recent decisions that allows you to acquire multiple seats at Regional events.
"It's thanks to a wonderful team with experienced colleagues that we can aim for perfection. We want to make EPT shine.
"I want to make a more ambitious event and make it an event where I can experience a better experience locally.
"That's why it is important to maintain balance and balance, and I think 4-6 events a year are the best. More than that, it will hit other events. Creating and advertising each live event. It is important to have enough time to do.
"One of our strategies and vision guidelines is to focus on quality than quantity. We want to make the event more ambitious. We spend more time in qualifying and have more time. We spend more time to promote events and make more time around the event.
Outlook for Live Poker in 2024
Coronavirus has completely become a past, but Billot acknowledges that it has changed people's perspective and eventually has a significant impact on the whole live poker. As a result, the live poker has risen in 2023, and its resurrection is likely to continue after 2024.
"The world was not able to leave the mobile phone and television for two years. As a result, I think people have grateful and enjoyed live poker, and live poker has greatly benefited."
The European poker has updated many records, and the biggest record in Pokerstars live tournaments is that Lucien Cohen won the € 676, 230 at the Estrellas Barcelona main event. The maximum main event record of FPS was updated twice, and the Eureka Prague Main Event also ended with record participants.
record | event | field | Winner |
---|---|---|---|
The largest Pokerstars live tournament | Estrore Barcelona | 7, 398 | Lucian Cohen |
The largest EPT Pragaha Main Event | EPT Prague | 1, 285 | Padraig O'Neill |
Maximum FPS main event | FPS Paris | 2, 071 | Alain Gorezdu |
FPS Monte Carlo | 2, 138 | Daisuke Ogita | |
Eureka's biggest main event | Eureka Prague | 4, 403 | Alexander Tokachu |
*FPS Paris updated the record of FPS Monte Carlo in 2022. FPS Monte Carlo regained a record two months later.
The EPT main event also records a huge field, Prague has updated the largest field of the EPT main event, Paris is the largest field of the EPT main event other than Barcelona, and Barcelona is the second largest field in the EPT main event history. It continues to control.
"The audience is looking for a live poker.
Billot acknowledges the huge growth, although the idea of a new live poker boom is "sweet".
"The desire for live poker is much higher than before the pandemic. I haven't reached the top yet, but it will not be doubled last year. Pokerstars hopes to continue this number. But that's what we work hard.
"The audience wants live poker. You only get a few chances a year to win $1 million online. You get 20 or even more chances to win $1 million live.
"I think live poker is safe for a long time in the digital age, where people spend more time on their mobile devices and screens.
