The Virginia Cavaliers lost to the Maryland Terrapins 27-13 on Saturday night at Scott Stadium.
The Hoos, looking to win their first three-game opening game since 2019, started strong against the Terrapins but stumbled, giving up 20 points after leading 13-7 late in the first half.
After a disappointing evening, here are five takeaways from Virginia's performance against the Terps.
UVA let one slip away
Although they ended up losing by a large margin, it felt like Virginia had the upper hand for most of the game. But you're not going to win many football games when you're down 4-0 in the turnover battle.
For the second straight week, Virginia came out of the locker room completely flat after halftime. Virginia managed just 23 yards of offense and one first down in the third quarter, allowing Maryland to overturn a 10-point deficit.
Last weekend against Winston-Salem, Virginia weathered a poor third quarter with a desperate comeback in the final 15 minutes, but had no such luck this week against Charlottesville, where their poor third quarter spilled over into the fourth quarter.
Third quarters are quickly becoming a problem
Overall, Virginia was outscored 20-0 at the end of the second half and 250-82. They also only managed five first downs after halftime, and their defense didn't give up as many points as they had in the first half.
The AC10 rollercoaster continued against the Terps on Saturday, with the sophomore gunslinger combining a handful of mind-boggling decisions with some truly electrifying quarterback play.
Colandrea forced a fumble in the red zone to deny the Hoos a lead.
The Anthony Colandrea rollercoaster ride continues
But AC10 quickly shook off the mistake, in stark contrast to last season's game against the Terrapins, when Colandrea threw three interceptions on five passing attempts. Colandrea pushed Virginia down the field on his next two possessions, scattering rocks to set up Will Bettridge's field goal.
After Maryland took a 7-6 lead late in the second quarter on a 19-yard strike to Ty Felton, Colandrea capped off a five-play, 49-second, 71-yard epic drive with a vintage pressure-fighting touchdown scramble to put UVA back on top before halftime.
But Colandrea and the Hoos offense couldn't do much after halftime. The sophomore quarterback threw his second pick of the game early in the third quarter, which stalled the offense for the rest of the second half.
Young quarterbacks have their ups and downs, but the good decision-making that was evident earlier this season was nowhere to be found against the Terps.
The Notre Dame transfer wide receiver was held without a catch in UVA's season opener against Richmond and had just four receptions for 11 yards last week against Wake Forest. It was a surprising start to the season for Tyree, who had a successful four-year career at South Bend and was hailed as one of Tony Elliott's biggest transfers of the offseason.
But Elliott said he didn't need to worry about Tyree's slow start and made a clear point of using the speedy freshman wideout against the Terrapins.
The ‘Hoos made a point of getting Chris Tyree involved
On the Cavaliers' first offensive play, Tyree got his first touch on a quick curl route up the middle, and was used on two screen passes and an end-around in the first quarter.
He finished with five catches for 33 yards, but his 65-yard touchdown was called back for a holding penalty, and his six touches were the most of any receiver in a game with fewer catches after halftime.
Virginia's offense will only get better if Tyree continues to play consistently.
Tony Elliott urged the Wahoo nation earlier this week to get loud on Saturday night. While there were still plenty of empty seats in the upper deck, the hill and student seats were full (maintaining a lively crowd through the second half) and the Who's fans in the stadium were in a frenzy.
That energy was clearly infectious to the Who's defense. Antonio Clary had a big play on the Terps' opening possession, breaking up a pass up the middle, and James Jackson and Jonas Sanker exchanged hard tackles on Maryland's second touch, forcing a three-and-out.
The Scott Stadium atmosphere mirrored the ‘Hoos performance
The crowd also prevented a false start by the Terrapins, helping the defense completely shut down Billy Edwards and the Maryland offense in the first quarter.
Unfortunately, the excitement in the stadium quickly died down in the second half, and the stands were nearly empty with just a few minutes left in the game.
The fans have proven they are ready to provide a great atmosphere at Scott Stadium, but it looks like the on-field performance will have to keep the deal going as well.

The line is an ove r-revision of Kansas's defeat last week in Illinois. UNLV is an excellent Mountain West team, is likely to join the conference title battle, but the difference between the two teams is still more than touch-down-Our action network PRO model, 11. 5 points of Jay Hawks. We anticipate it as a face barit. Why Kansas Jayhawks Can Cover the Spread
Jaron Daniels, the Quarter Back, has been proven to be one of the most electric players in this country.
Last year, while fighting back injuries, in 2022 he recorded 18 touchdowns and recorded seven more touchdowns. Average 8. 8 yards and 5. 4 yards with a pass.
Daniels' dual thread ability is perfectly combined with Star Running Back Devin Neil.
Neil is one of the best Bucks in the United States. He has recorded 1, 000 yards for the second consecutive year, exceeding the average of 6. 1 yards per carry in the last two years. This season, they have recorded more than 100 yards each game, and have average 9. 7 yards.
The Kansas team's strength is a number of big play. Last year's explosive power was 11th in the United States, and there are already eight explosive plays this season, even without Andy Cotter Nicks Offense Offense Coordinators.
This is still a Lance Ray Pold team. Jay Hawks has a success rate of 20th, 6. 5 yards per play.
There is concern about Unlv's defense. The biggest weakness is to allow chunk play, which is exactly what Kansas offense is. Levels were ranked 123rd with explosive power last year.
The weakness may have improved this year, as he has not yet laid his head this year. However, they are also playing against two terrible offenses, and even a small level of improvement is still below average.
In the defeat of Iarini, Jay Hawks overwhelmed Iarini and earned 5. 5 yards on the ground.
While UNLV is a big ste p-up, I would like to expect Kansas to rewind.
UNLV: SU2 wins 0 losses, ATS 2 wins 0 loss, victor to Houston.
Kansas: I lost to Illinois, SU1 wins and 1 loss, ATS0 wins and 2 losses.
Jeff Grime's New Offense Coordinator was not the best season for Jaron Daniels.
Why UNLV Rebels Can Cover the Spread
- Glims promised to bring an uptempo offense with a lot of rushes in Kansas. However, in the process, Daniels and Jay Hawks have greatly obstacles:
- Kanzas statistics
Rush rate
39. 4%
50. 0% | 2023 | 2024 |
---|---|---|
Number of seconds per play | 28. 8 | 26. 7 |
EPA per drop back | . 37 | . 01 |
Pass rate | 49. 4% | 46. 3% |
Daniels has already thrown an intercept four times in four plays worth turnover through two games. In the match against Illinois, 56%of the pass 32 times, 4. 4YPA recorded 140 yards, and the PRO FOOTBALL FOCUS pass grade was 47. 4 points. | This is the price of losing Andy Kotelnitski during the of f-season. Drewers and Pennsylvanian State University's pas s-offs seem to have already been significantly improved in early 2024 (EPA per drop back 10th in the country), but Daniels and Kansas seem to be incorrect. | Conversely, Brennan Marion's g o-go offense looks more than acceptable at the beginning of the season. |
Levels develop offenses that use up tempo downhill rush a lot, and when the defenders are drawn into the box, they are scattered with deep shots.
Last year's Mountain West has not scored more per game than UNLV (34. 4), and 3. 8 yards per WR1 Ricky White Routelin (88 times, 1, 483 yards, touchdown 8 times). In the shadow of the score (the second place in the United States among the players with a pass catcher qualification), there were few such explosive teams (15th).
Through two games this season, Michael Allen (5. 8YPC), Greg Barrel (7. 8YPC), and Kairin James (7. 4YPC) can fully replace the 760 yards of Vincent Davis last year. I am.
White, on the other hand, has already scored seven receives, 122 yards, and 3 goals (17. 4ypr, 3. 8YRR), and is an explosive receiver perfect for g o-go scheme.
Although he has some anxiety about the new QB1 Matthew Sulka, he has a high ceiling for four years at Holy Cross. His RPO and dual slets (129 yards for 6. 5 ypc through two games) should be compatible with Odom and Marion.
There is also a arm that pushes the ball into the downfield, and the yard (16. 6) per complete throw is ranked in the top 15 in the United States.
I like Sulka and White to fit Odom and Marion. There are two players who don't know if they are booms or busts.
More importantly, Jay Hawk's defense is vulnerable to g o-go scheme.
Although the corner bag is strong, the front 7 is weak, lost three of all five defense lines and the top four tackers last year. The line is small, and there is only one player with more than 300 pounds.
If you can't stop the run, you will be buried in g o-go, you will be dipped with a downhill, and you will be set up a deep shot to white.
Last year, Kansas allowed the 119th place rush success rate (45 %) nationwide. Inexperienced, smal l-sized front 7-Includes the right tackle tiger shanks of the All MWC in 2023, which returned three starters from the offense of UNLV.
Daniels, on the other hand, looks unstable, and Glime looks like a significant downgrade. Jay Hawks has to beat out on Thursday to cover this touc h-down size spread.
While the David Booth Memorial Stadium has been renovating, Kansas will also be particularly deserving the minimum home field advantage, as will perform all home games this year in the arrow head.

Live display of the winning rate of the bed Download now Ianniello: Daniels is late in this offense, but expects to improve as the system gets used to it. He has just returned from his back injury, and he would need several games to regain the game speed. Also, I think Tanner sells Sulka a little too much. Sulka, who came up from the FCS level, is struggling as a Passer. It is a disastrous figure with only 116 yards per game per game and 46. 7 % of the completion rate. Sulka himself often slows down for turnover. He has already played twice this year, only three times, and has been playing with FCS opponents to turn over a total of 43 careers. Why Jayhawks Are Better Bet
I agree with Tanner in that Ricky White is an absolute stud. The problem is that Sulka has no arms. White has only 7 catches this season, with an average of about 61 yards per game. I couldn't see it in Houston.
Kansas also has weapons. Lawrence Arnold, Quentin Skinner and Luke Grim are all returned and are the leading players in the wide receiver room. Skinner is the fourth season, and Arnold and Grim are in Jay Hawks.
Daniels are very used to these receivers, and they will soon click and bring a pass game equivalent to the Lashing Attack.
Jay Hawks' defense lost a few starters, but did not use a large number of first graders.
Almost everyone is an experienced player who has been one of the rotation last year and is ready for ste p-up. Eight out of 11 defenses starter are seniors, and the other three are juniors. They know what they are doing.
Cobbie Bryant and Mello Dotson's powerful cornerback combination returns to Kansas. Last season, two seniors had a total of 8 intercepts. This season has not yet allowed a pass and touchdown of more than 200 yards. Kansas has only allowed offense touchdown this season.
The offense of Sulka's UNLV looks very one dimensional. Daniels believes that they will throw the ball more than Sulka, although they are slow.
MCgrATH: Daniels last season was studs, but how many of them were due to Kotelnitski?
The people of Jayhawk seem to be very worried that Glims cannot protect Daniels from a serious turnover retreat-Daniels, if there was no offense genius in 2020, 205 dropbacks He recorded six bi g-time slow (3. 7 %) play (6. 5 %) worth 14 turnover.
Last week, Kansas may have surpassed the gain than Illinois and may have won the game, but I don't think it was a completely unusual defeat.
Why Rebels Are Better Bet
The SP+win rate after Jay Hawks was only 58 %, far from overwhelming performance. They overwhelmed the Irini team, which I have been very low, with only 30 yards.
More importantly, looking at levels' defense is less than necessary. The team is a super veteran, and six starters, including three Al l-conference players, have returned from last year.
The top three tackers in 2023 returned. Six of the top eight defense line in 2023 returned. The top two defense Bucks are also back.
Odom also added a monster a monster called Jaren Catalon, a sixth year stronger, Jalen Catalon, in his sixth year in Arkansas and Texas. In PFF's defense rating (90. 1), he is currently second among qualified safety (40 snaps or more).
Check the catalon play in the Houston:
Take the platform with a pass rush, chip the screensetus, catch the chip, put the quarterback on skating, and bring it to your house. He is a type of impact transfer that can change the secondary, especially the secondary, deep and cros s-zamidl ball.
Levels are vulnerable to explosions, but they are built into Odom's aggressive ball hooking scheme.
Last year, UNLV picked up 17 passes in the fourth place in the country, including five passes of Cameron Oliver. Oliver, Captain Line Bucker Jackson Woodarddaddo, Marcel McDafi, Jonathan Baldwin, and Jeff Elad have recorded a total of 23 pbu last season, all of which are repeater. Needless to say, the catalon has already picked up two people in the new system.
He may make some more decisive mistakes in consideration of Daniels's irregular play so far, and the history of his irregular and irregular play without Kotelnitsuki. It is very difficult for Kansas to cover moderately large spreads.
Levels force two intercepts and eight TFLs in the first week of Houston, suitable for 10 Habok play at a 16 % Habok rate, Cougers success rate 31 % (8 %), EPA per play. -0. 29 (7 percentile) was tremendously low. Houston is not a good offense, but this performance indicates that the levels stop unit is not a joke.
Ianniello: UNLV has several strengths, and joining a catalon is a good feeling so far.
Nevertheless, he is a former Blue Chip Recruit, the sixth season at his third university. This is a big red light. If he has such a talent, he should be in NFL or at least in SEC.
Last season, the Rebels ranked outside the top 100 nationally in pass defense, blowouts allowed, havocs made and defensive finishing drives. That's a perfect defense for Daniels and Kansas.
Kansas Football Spread: Why Jayhawks Will Cover
UNLV is built to beat bad teams with its ability to create big plays. But look at how the Rebels have fared when they've been competitive, especially on defense:
Michigan: 35 points, 8. 1 yards per play
Fresno State: 31 points, 5. 1 yards per play
San Jose State: 37 points, 7. 3 yards per play
- Boise State: 44 points, 8. 0 yards per play
- These are the four best offenses they've faced. They lost all four games.
- Also, I’m not a bowl game guy, so Kansas’ blowout win over UNLV in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl doesn’t count as a handicap to me.
- But I think it’s a big advantage for this defensive staff to have seen this unique go-go offense before.
That’s one area where the Jayhawks’ new offense might actually help them. Their staff was already scouting and preparing for UNLV just a few months ago, whereas the Rebels have to start from scratch.
It’s also worth noting that in this game, Kansas threw for 449 yards and 6 touchdowns, while holding UNLV’s rushing attack to just 95 yards.
Jay Biggerstaff/Getty Images Photo of Kansas quarterback Jaron Daniels.
McGrath: White was “invisible” against Houston because the Rebels didn’t need to use him. They were sitting on a rock, running the ball a whopping 48 times and attempting only 14 passes while trailing by a point.
But then Odom, Marion and Sulka decided to use White, who exploded last week for 111 yards and three touchdowns on just five passes.
You're saying Sulka doesn't have the arm to take advantage of White's explosiveness? Who the hell do you think threw passes to White?!
UNLV Football Spread: Why Rebels Will Cover
This is an absolute bomb thrown perfectly into single coverage:
Let's talk about weapons. Grimm caught nine passes for a whopping 40 yards against Illinois, good for 4. 4 YPR. Arnold and Skinner combined for 80 yards on eight catches.
Illinois' Zachary Franklin was the best receiver on the field today and had his best line in two years (nine catches, 99 yards, one touchdown).
Why did Franklin play his best game in two years? Whatever experience Kansas has on defense is relatively useless.
The Jayhawks were 117th in EPA per play and 123rd in success rate last year. They were third to last in the nation in EPA per rush, allowing almost 5. 5 yards per carry!
It's outlandish to say this unit "knows what it's doing."
Kansas started winning under Leipold because Kotelnicki built a beautiful, intricate, motion-based system that coaxed high-scoring wins despite a lackluster defense. Now that the offensive system is gone, all the Jayhawks have left is that lifeless, smaller-sized defense.
