Premier League bans gambling sponsorship on front of matchday shirts

In April 2023, the British Premier League club agreed to prohibit using gambling sponsors in front of the match shirt. The movement was just before the British government announced the results of the Gambling Reform, and it is expected to include additional player protection for online gambling, especially sports betting, and consideration for affordability.

The club and the league have discussed with the Digital, Culture, Media and Sports Ministry, and the Digital, Culture, and Media and Sports have revised their own gambling methods. As described in this article, gambling is not only the highest level of sports, but also widely penetrated throughout the UK soccer, so this movement is visible in the effects of betting and gambling companies on the entire soccer. It is seen as the beginning of the transitional period to reduce.

However, the abolition of front sponsorship of the shirt, such as shirts sleeves, training wear, pitc h-side advertising tower, and TV commercials, still has many opportunities for shirts.

For the past year, XACE conducted an important survey on gambling sponsorship in British soccer, and the funding in sports directly supports domestic leagues other than the Premier League Megaric owner, and grassroots soccer and no n-league. Until soccer, we have provided insights from both sides. This is a very important and valuable survey for sports to be sustainable at the lower level.

League sponsorship in the EFL

As a result, a rebound has occurred, such as gambling charitable organizations on the effects of advertisements on gambling addiction patients and children. And in mi d-2021, the British government announced plans to abolish gambling brand advertisements in soccer jerseys.

The ban on gambling ads in soccer will reduce the revenue of individual clubs and leagues as a whole. Not surprisingly, the soccer world has risen to this problem.

According to the EFL spokeswoman quoted by the BBC, there is almost no evidence that ads will increase gambling addicted patients. Furthermore, in the aftermath of pandemic, many clubs are facing a serious lack of funds (tickets are collapsed by lockdown), and prohibiting gambling sponsorship is a fatal wound for small clubs. Some voices are worried.

So, how much sponsoring soccer sponsor in the England soccer league? To know that, XACE analyzed the published information and examined which club was contracting with a gambling company. Read more to know the current state of gambling sponsorship in the England soccer world.

What kinds of sponsorship feature in the EFL?

In April 2022, we collected information from websites in the England Football League (EFL), EFL teams, and various media to reveal the size of gambling sponsorship in soccer.

Football shirt sponsorship

Focusing on the top five leagues of the EFL (Premier League, EFL Championship, EFL League 1, EFL League 2, Banarama National League), these leagues are the most ful l-time professional club and advertising revenue. This is because fans and TV viewers are most attractive.

The following analysis is widespread, but only use information that is open to the public and widely accessible. Some data (especially related to the value of sponsor contracts) were not available for commercial reasons.

Focusing on five leagues and 115 club ads and sponsorship, focused on general TV/ online ads around soccer. He also excluded advertisements for other soccer competitions (for example, European Champions League).

The following analysis provides unique and abundant images of gambling ads in England soccer.

Here are everything you need to know about gambling sponsorship in the EFL of 2021/22.

There are a total of 115 clubs in the top five EFL leagues. Of these, 31 clubs have some sort of partnership or relationship with a betting or gambling company. This means that 27% of clubs have an affiliation or direct relationship with the gambling business.

Digging into the data, some clear trends emerge:

The majority of gambling sponsorship deals are associated with Premier League and Championship clubs.

The Premier League has the highest number of teams that have partnerships with betting or casino companies. 15 out of 20 Premier League clubs have such partnerships.

In the Championship, 12 clubs have some sort of partnership with a betting or casino company.

In EFL League One, none of the 24 teams have a direct sponsorship relationship with a gambling company.

In EFL League Two, only one out of 24 teams has a betting partnership, which is Stevenage, who have a partnership with Betting. Bet.

Finally, in the Vanarama National League, four teams have some sort of deal with a gambling company.

It is also possible for a gambling company to sponsor all leagues in the EFL. In fact, every league except the Premier League has some sort of sponsorship deal with a gambling company (the Premier League does not currently have any sponsorship deals with any companies, but has previously had sponsorship deals with banks and alcohol companies).

Betting business Sky Bet has deals with the Championship, League One and League Two, said to be worth millions of pounds per season.

Official betting partnerships

Meanwhile, the Vanarama National League is sponsored by the National Lottery, gambling companies UniBet and 32Red. During the pandemic, the UK charity National Lottery set up a £10 million fund to help lower league clubs during the pandemic.

Advertisements from league sponsors like Sky Bet are prominent on shows, TV broadcasts, stadium advertising, social media and on the shirt sleeves of many teams, so clubs without gambling sponsorship are definitely in the minority. By this measure, there are only four EFL clubs that do not appear to have sponsorship agreements with gambling companies: Liverpool, Manchester City, Everton and Brighton & Hove Albion.

There are several types of sponsorship that gambling companies choose to have in the EFL.

Gambling Sleeve sponsorship

As mentioned above, the most controversial form of gambling advertising in the EFL is shirt sponsorship, which places the betting company's logo on the front of a club's jersey.

Stadium sponsorships in iGaming

There are 15 clubs in the EFL that have a gambling business as their shirt sponsor, with nine in the Premier League and six in the Championship. The clubs with gambling shirt sponsors are:

Coventry City - Boylesports

  • Derby County - 32Red
  • Stoke City - Bet365
  • Shirt sponsorships are the most notable, but there are a few other ways that EFL teams partner with gambling companies.
  • The most common way is by having some kind of "official betting partnership". As mentioned in the previous section, if we include league sponsors as betting partners, a total of 111 teams definitely have "betting partners". Excluding league sponsors, 20 teams have some kind of "official betting partner".

UK versus international sponsorship in the EFL

Some teams have more than one betting partner. For example, at Newcastle United, Bet365 is the club's "official betting partner" and Ireland's Boylesports is the team's "UK and Ireland betting partner".

  • Most teams with betting partners are in the Premier League and Championship, but there are four teams in the Vanarama National League that also have some kind of betting partner.
  • Another option is sleeve sponsorship, which displays the betting company's logo on the sleeve of the shirt. Only one team in the EFL has such a sleeve sponsor, Aston Villa, with OB. com. However, all teams in the Championship, League One and League Two have the logo of league sponsor Sky Bet on their sleeves.
  • Some EFL teams have also chosen to rename their stadiums as part of partnership deals with various companies (for example, Arsenal's deal with Emirates Airlines). Championship team Stoke City sold naming rights to Bet365 (Bet365 Stadium) in 2016. Then in 2021, Bet365 bought the stadium outright for more than £70 million.
  • There are several other sponsorship deals between EFL clubs and betting companies. For example, Cardiff City's training wear is sponsored by 888 Casino. Some clubs offer the option to sponsor individual players, matchday programs, VIP lounges, and other aspects, but we could not find any data on these deals.
  • It is very difficult to say exactly how much gambling sponsorships will be worth to the EFL in the 2021/22 season. Estimates from 2020 suggest that gambling contributes around £70 million to the Premier League and £40 million to lower league clubs. However, most of these deals are commercially confidential, so it is not possible to get a clear picture of the value of gambling sponsorship to each club.
  • Most of the publicly available information is about shirt sponsorships for Premier League clubs, with the average value of shirt sponsorships per season being around £7 million. Betway's deal to sponsor West Ham United's shirt is the highest at £10 million, followed by ManBetX's £8 million paid for Wolverhampton Wanderers' shirt and SportBet. io's £7. 5 million paid for Southampton's jersey.
  • Given the global popularity of the Premier League, it may come as no surprise that betting companies are most keen to secure sponsorship deals with top league teams.
  • However, the club with the most partnerships across all five leagues is Torquay United, in the Vanarama National League, with 12 deals with gambling and casino companies. Torquay United are unusual among the rest, however, with most sponsorships found among top-flight teams:

Leicester City comes first, with five gambling sponsors.

Leicester City comes first, with five gambling sponsors.

Regional differences in EFL club sponsorship

Southampton, Leeds United and Aston Villa have two gambling partners each, as do Championship teams Blackburn Rovers, Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion.

The variety of gambling companies sponsoring EFL clubs shows that this market is very competitive and open. There were 26 gambling companies that sponsor at least one team in the EFL (we excluded the 11 sponsors of Torquay United as most of their gambling partners are casino companies, but we did exclude their partnership with William Hill, who also sponsors Tottenham Hotspurs).

Gambling sponsorship in the EFL is deep rooted

Most gambling businesses only sponsor one club in one league, but a handful advertise with multiple teams.

The most prolific is Bet365, which has sponsorship deals with four teams, two in the Premier League and two in the Championship.

Next is PariMatch, which has three partnerships with Premier League teams.

BoyleSports also partners with three teams (one Premier League team, two Championship teams).

Sportsbet. io (two Premier League clubs), HTH (two Premier League clubs), William Hill (Tottenham Hotspurs and Torquay United), 32Red also sponsors two Championship teams.

Could a gambling advertising ban threaten English football’s integrity?

English football is perhaps the most watched sports league in the world, so it is no surprise that the Premier League in particular attracts sponsorship from multiple international betting businesses. Below are the countries with EFL betting sponsorship:

United Kingdom (including overseas territories such as Gibraltar): William Hill, Bet365, Spreadex Sports, W88 (based in the UK but focused on Asia), SBOTOP (based in the Isle of Man but focused on Asia), BetVictor (Gibraltar) ↪Cf_200D

This analysis shows just how international EFL gambling sponsorship has become.

Sponsors of Championship teams tend to be more European, being based either in the UK, Ireland, Gibraltar or Malta.

We also wanted to explore whether there were regional differences in sponsorship of EFL clubs. We divided the UK somewhat roughly into two parts, with Birmingham and the area north of it designated as the "North" and the area south of it designated as the "South".

Dividing the country in this way reveals that there are 25 partnerships between football clubs and gambling businesses in the north (some clubs have multiple sponsorship deals, and some gambling businesses sponsor multiple clubs), compared to only 14 in the south (excluding Torquay United on the south coast, which has 12 sponsorship deals with gambling companies).

Through this research, we hoped to get a complete picture of gambling sponsorship in the EFL. What emerges is a sport with deeply intertwined partnerships between football teams, the league and gambling businesses.

-Ingrand football leagues have gambling sponsorships in effect, and as mentioned above, only four teams seem to have nothing to do with gambling business. Most teams in League 1 and League 2 are not directly sponsored by gambling companies, but the fact that these leagues are sponsors of SKY BET means fans, programs, shirts sleeve, It is almost impossible to see gambling ads in club social media feeds.

-There, as an analysis, of course, the Premier League is the most gambling sponsorship, and most teams have at least one gambling business. The lower league does not collect much gambling sponsorship, but as shows the 10 million pounds provided by the National Rotary in 2020 to support the lower league during pandemic, gambling money has been a survival of some clubs. It seems to be indispensable.

-Especially in the Premier League, nearly tw o-thirds of sponsor companies are located outside the UK.

Through this research, we hoped to get a complete picture of gambling sponsorship in the EFL. What emerges is a sport with deeply intertwined partnerships between football teams, the league and gambling businesses.

The British government plans to announce the Gambling method in 2022. Betting businesses have strongly suggest that they should be regulated by sports advertising.

The important reasons for reviewing gambling addiction and the fact that children watching sports on television are contacting betting through gambling ads. The law has not been updated since the 2005 gambling law, and is not considered to be in conjunction in the digital age.

What is a betting partnership?

The government has various options. The strictest thing is that all advertisements in sports, from television ads, bulletin boards, teamwear, and collaboration, are uniformly prohibited.

This seems to be unlikely to be confused in the horse racing industry, which depends on the funds from bookmakers.

The most likely is the laws for soccer, especially shirts sponsorship and titles (leagues and cups) sponsorship.

In this article, we try to understand what the consequences would be for the sport, and for gambling companies, if the latter option were to materialize.

The precedents of Italy and Spain, the football industry's thoughts that many clubs would be financially struggling, how they are preparing for the ban, and what other sponsorships will replace gambling. And what will the consequences be?

The Gambling Deregulation Act of 2005. Until then, gambling television and radio advertising was banned. Between 2007 and 2013, gambling advertising spending increased by 600%.

Gambling has become a 24/7 hobby. No longer do people have to go to a high street betting shop to place a bet. They can now bet on their mobile phone or online, whenever and wherever they want. Between 2010 and 2018, online betting has increased and brick-and-mortar betting has decreased.

Betting company logos have been found to be displayed 700 times during football matches. The betting industry has banned the playing of whistles and whistles during afternoon matches.

Campaigners believe such visibility will lead to an increase in gambling addiction. However, Gambling Commission investigations carried out in June 2021 and September 2021 found no evidence of an increase in risk or problem gambling.

Unsurprisingly, gambling advertising is a major source of income for the football industry. Annual contributions to clubs from sponsorship deals are estimated to be worth £100 million, with £200 million going to broadcasters. The English Football League has a bookmaker (Sky Bet) as its title sponsor, estimated to be worth £40 million over five years.

For the 2021-22 season, at least 14 Premier League clubs have partnerships with betting operators, and 15 in the Championship. Some Premier League clubs have partnerships with multiple clubs.

Gambling operators pay for the right to be associated with their brand and expect increased exposure, engagement and of course revenue. Clubs receive a fee for the association and in some cases a share of the revenue generated. (Manchester United previously signed a global betting partnership with Yabo Sports, which was reported to have earned them £3 million).

The problem with betting partnerships is that they are dominated by offshore operators or "white label" companies. These are companies that are not based in the UK and use intermediaries registered with the Gambling Commission to obtain a license. TGP Europe, based in the Isle of Man, specialises in white label packages. Most Premier League clubs have betting partnerships for the 2021-22 season.

How will the gambling industry react to increased restrictions in England?

England's game follows Italy and Spain. Italy introduced a ban on gambling sponsorship in sports in July 2018. All existing advertising contracts had to end by July 2019. Spain introduced a ban in November 2020. In both countries, betting partnerships with overseas operators are still permitted. In May 2022, Belgium announced a ban on gambling advertising.

It is too early to assess the financial impact on Spanish football clubs, but some conclusions can be drawn from Italy.

When the ban was announced, Italian football authorities said it could be catastrophic for clubs, arguing that commercial revenues, especially shirt sponsorship fees, would fall significantly. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) also argued that television contracts would be affected, as the gambling ban would reduce advertising revenues for broadcasters.

The pandemic and its financial impact (which would cost an estimated 500 million euros) led the FIGC to ask for the ban to be suspended until 2023. However, the Italian government refused.

There is also evidence that the FIGC may have slightly overreacted. Shirt sponsorship revenues have actually increased by more than 20 million euros since the ban, although the market size is somewhat biased by Juventus' three-year 45 million euro deal with Jeep. Only two clubs, Roma and Lazio, lost sponsorship contracts with gambling companies. Lazio remains without a sponsor.

Serie A has slightly reduced television income with the renewal of the broadcasting contract. The league will receive a 973 million euros per year (about 1. 188 billion yen) to about 920. 27. 5 million euros (about 1. 13 billion yen). The income of the entire club is decreasing. But all of these factors are due to pandemic, not gambling sponsorship.

The debate that gambling income loses greatly hit finances is not clear. The main problem in Italian soccer is that the club is giving a high height, as most leagues are. During the 2019-20 season, five of the 20 clubs of Serie A (Sastro, Naples, Udinese, Genoa, Atalanta) recorded profits after tax.

How will football react?

In Spain, Liga Espanola's 8 clubs and Segunda (2 copies) had to find a new shirt main sponsor to contract with a bookmaker. Only one club (Arabeth) had no main shirt sponsor for the 2020-21 season.

How did Liga Espanja's club escape from gambling?

Valencia BWIN → Socios. com (cryptocurrency)

Espanyol Bet Way → Riviera Maya (sightseeing)

Leganes Bet Way → Ulvas (Real Estate)

The industry is prepared for the banner world to ban shirts. Also, there will be no great surprises even if TV ads and stadium bulletin boards are completely banned.

Cryptocurrency

What do businesses do to attract and avoid the latter?

There is an ol d-fashioned precedent for cigarette companies to respond to sports sponsor ban in the 1980s. The Malboro brand of Philip Morris, a major tobacco, was the main sponsor of F1 Ferrari. The company has maintained its relationship and influence by launching a company and social responsibility project called Mission Winou. The Maruboro logo was replaced with a mission Winou brand.

In the soccer world, the same thing is happening as a gambling sponsor. The entertainment group (including Radbroks and Coral) has "withdrawn from a soccer sponsorship in the UK." Instead, he established Pitching Inn, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) model, and became a sponsor of the Istimi League, the Northern Premier League, and the Southern League.

William Hill's Foundation supports Scottish soccer "i n-sports support" initiative to improve mental health awareness and education.

Gambling operators, in order to retain some advertising rights, might provide a levy to pay into a community fund to support grassroots projects and other CSR initiatives. In France, lottery and sports betting revenues contribute directly to the budget of the National Sport Agency, which in turn subsidizes sports clubs at local level.

This would tie in with the recent “fan-led football review” theme of strengthening clubs as community assets. Grants could be distributed by any of football’s several leagues, funding bodies or regulatory bodies. Again, there is precedent for this kind of arrangement when Sport England and UK Sport distributed Covid emergency funds.

Just as the gambling industry foresaw what was to come, so did football. In 2017, the Football Association terminated its £4 million deal with Ladbrokes after one year. The sporting world has already seen a significant decline in gambling-related sponsorship.

According to a 2021 study, the share of gambling-related sponsorship in football team sponsorship revenue has halved from 32. 7% two years ago to 15. 2%.

Furthermore, among 221 sports teams analyzed across 13 different leagues/competitions, the construction/engineering, automotive and financial services sectors have overtaken gambling as the most common category of sponsorship.

  • Individual football clubs have not only begun to plan without gambling funds, but have also rejected gambling funds. Crystal Palace changed their shirt sponsor for the 2022-23 season from W88 (who reportedly paid them £6. 5 million a season) to car dealership Cinch. Newcastle United ended their shirt sponsorship deal with Fun88 two years early, with the change understood to be mainly due to the ability to raise more funds. However, Everton was criticized for their "record deal" with Stake. com. League One's Bolton Wanderers and League Two's Tranmere Rovers are the clubs considered most at risk if they are denied access to certain types of sponsorship. This includes shirt sponsorship and betting kiosks in the ground.
  • At this level, a front-shirt sponsorship deal can be worth up to £200, 000, a back-shirt sponsorship deal £20, 000 and a betting kiosks £20, 000 per year.
  • These are large sums of money for a club of their size, but there is little evidence that they would not be able to find alternative sponsors, and indeed this is the view within the industry.
  • Tranque shirts contracts are estimated to be up to £ 150, 000. The most important result of a small contract, as gambling companies provide another 50, 000 pounds, may be to contract with a few players for the team. Including the back of the shirt and the betting kiosk, it may be 1. 5.

Soccer club marketing teams will respond by searching for alternative sponsors more flexibly. It may be inclined to strengthen cooperation with local companies and strengthen the connection with the community. This was the theme of fa n-led England soccer, which is expected to be released in the summer of 2022 in the summer of 2022. When I Trust Sport talked to the soccer executives, this was a strong theme. Similarly, there were some opinions that this sport had become "lazy" by taking the "simple" option to get money from a bookmaker.

Betting deals at risk and financial hit looms for football clubs as ban considered by Government

In addition, the soccer marketing team has received sufficient warnings about what will happen and planned according to it. The debate is the same for the England Football League, which is worried that a 40 million pound title sponsor contract with Skybet may not be reproduced. The club also shares the concerns.

But what about it? Currently, £ 450 million central tax revenues are distributed in the League 72 Club. About half of these are parachute payments to the Premier League demanding club. The rest are mainly broadcast income and are distributed on a weighted average. The championship club receives about £ 7 million, the League 1 club receives £ 1. 6 million, and the League 2 clubs have £ 1 million. The value of the title sponsor must drop significantly for the club to be more difficult to contract with a roaster with extra players.

This touches on the core of the "fa n-led review", which is considered as a club that is regarded as an asset in the community so that it can survive by not exceeding the height. Proposals include checking funds and restrictions on wages in sales.

Gambling sponsorship and banning advertisements may be "better as devils you know." A cryptocurrency company has entered the blanks left by the betting operator. Unlike the gambling industry, cryptocurrency is not regulated.

Serie A's Intel Milan has changed his shirt sponsor from Pirelli to Socios. com, a cryptocurrency company for the first time in 26 years. The contract with Pirelli was reported to be more than 10 million euros, but Intel was said to have called a new contract for 30 million euros.

Socios. com is also a sponsor of the Spanish team, Valencia, instead of BWIN, a bookmaker. BWIN was expected to pay 4. 8 million euros in three years. The amount of new contracts is not clear, but Playbook. com reports that it will be half the price in one year.

Intel and Valencia both advertise their team tokens on their shirts. These tokens can be purchased by fans, and in return, you can get the right to decide on which color scarf you will wear in the game. The tokens are sold to millions at a time, usually pounds (about 1, 000 yen). The club receives half and Socio receives half.

Of the 20 Premier League clubs, 14 clubs have one or more commercial transactions with companies that operate in the cryptocurrency field, despite concerns of supporters' organizations for exploitation and lack of regulations. Socios. com has a contract with six clubs.

There is a debate that clubs are encouraging people to "bet" with different names without any check and balance.

Lack of regulations has already caused a problem. Manchester City paused his relationship with the club because he could not clarify the 3-key owner, an emerging cryptocurrency. However, the city has a partnership with three other companies. Barcelona has also finished a similar contract with Ownix.

LinkedIn

The Financial Activity Survival Organization (FCA), which is concerned about this situation, has revealed to fans that there is no regulation. FCA Chairman Charles Landor compares cryptocurrencies with the "ge t-rich" commercial law. He stated that the buyer should be alert. These tokens are not regulated by FCA ... If you buy them, you need to be prepared to lose all property. "

How is cryptocurrency trading performed?

Companies like Socios impose "influence" to fans, but the votes they provide to the club's policy are insignificant.

The more you buy more fan tokens in the club, the more votes you can get.

The price of the token is determined by supply and demand, so it goes up and goes down. Therefore, it is similar to a pure gambling.

The cryptocurrency company owns most of the currency. By partnering with soccer "brand", they are fueling the currency.
