In 2001, the Partnership was founded to address this critical need.

America has faced other crises, from the war in Ukraine and COVID-19 to economic turmoil, natural disasters, and acts of racial injustice. And as before, we relied on our government -- our most important public institutions -- to respond.

Last year, we faced yet another urgent crisis: persistent challenges to American democracy that have undermined public confidence in how we are governed. These challenges include a tumultuous presidential transition, a violent insurrection against Congress, and growing doubts about the legitimate results of an election. At the same time, many Americans remain lacking equal opportunity, a disparity that has been exacerbated by the pandemic and contributed to a decline in trust in public institutions.

Addressing these issues is crucial to the health of our democracy, but we can only do so if the federal government responds to the changes in the world around us and lives up to its full promise and potential.

In 2021, the Partnership worked tirelessly to realize this vision, developing bipartisan, forward-thinking, multifaceted solutions to transform how government serves the American people and demonstrate its essential role in protecting our health, safety, and well-being.

During a tumultuous presidential transition, we worked closely with President Biden's team, the Trump Administration, and agency career leaders and political appointees to execute the nation's first virtual transition of power and ensure the continuation of one of the core traditions of our democracy: the successful transfer of presidential power. We also launched an initiative to support congressional staff in the wake of the January 6 attack on the Capitol. This is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen our parliamentary system so that Congress can more effectively listen, lead, and legislate for our diverse nation.

Additionally, we continued to support the growth and development of our career civil servants -- the 2 million federal employees who work for the American people across politics and party lines.

We also helped strengthen federal agency workforces by expanding fellowship, internship, and exchange programs. We also continued to highlight the achievements of outstanding federal employees to demonstrate how effective government positively impacts our lives.

Throughout, our customer experience data, insights, and research have enabled agencies to better serve those who typically use federal services, as well as those who often struggle the most to access them. A new nonprofit organization is born
