PokerStars and Online Poker History
PokerStars and Online Poker History
In December 2021, Pokerstars Room, one of the world's leading online poker rooms, celebrated its 20th anniversary. The history of this poker game contains many dramatic floats. In this article, I would like to look back on the company's steps since its foundation and introduce important historical events in the context of the development of the entire poker since its foundation.
Online Poker Up to PokerStars
Until 2001, online poker was in the early days. The idea of electronic poker itself was born long before the popular Internet appeared.
The first poker program was developed in the 1970s with the birth of a personal computer. In the early 1980s, Mike Caro, a famous poker player and aoret, had a nickname "Mad Poker Genius", wrote a program for the hea d-up game of Limited Holdem on Apple II computers. He also showed good results to players. At the same time, the first video poker machine was installed at the Las Vegas casino, and the early video poker console could play draw pokers and studded pokers between players and computers.
In 1988, the first IRC chat network was created, and in 1994, scientists at the University of Carnegie Melon in Pittsburgh made a script for IRC users to play with poker. After connecting to the poker server, the player selects a channel that corresponds to the type of poker, and inputs the size of the commands and beds of "Check", "Call", "Call", and the size of the bed itself. Was done. The game was played with play money chips, but did not prevent some poker players from playing with actual money.
In 1995, the first online marketplace, such as Amazon and EBAY, emphasized the rapid development of the online payment system. Soon the first gambling site began to appear.
The first rea l-money hand was played on a $ 3/$ 6 limit on January 1, 1998 on a minimum of $ 30 ba y-in. The game in this room was played directly on the browser, and the graphics were extremely primitive. Poker table still images, player's avatars that could not be changed, and modest action animations. The modem connection did not go well, was frequently disconnected, and a vulnerability was found in the random number generator, but was later resolved. Nevertheless, thanks to Mike CARO's advertising, which became the first ambassador in the history of online poker, the traffic in the room has rapidly increased.
In 1999, Paradise Poker took over the improved software, graphics, and more games, and Partypoker opened in the summer of 2001. PartyPoker is known for its larg e-scale promotional campaign and tournament, which is correct, the 2, 000th leader online poker. It was here that the $ 1, 000, 000 tournament first appeared.
Emergence of PokerStars
Later, in the fall of 2001, Pokerstars started playing a play money, and in December it was possible to use real money games. Pokerstars has stepped up from competitors by providing better graphics and animation to users. The client has a basic game statistics, and you can take your opponent's notes and upload your avatar. In addition to the Holdem, there are Omaha and Stud Poker, most of them are Limited Format, but there are also potatoes. The first account on this site was created by Swedish player, OSCAR Pokermaniac Hornell. Pokerstars Room has provided a wide range of tournaments, is an important innovation in online poker and plays a major role in the poker boom. In the next few years, Pacific Poker (later renamed to 888Poker), Absolute Poker, Bodog, and Full Tilt Poker began to lead the industry.
But at the time of 2001, online poker was still a very new phenomenon and was not completely accepted by the poker community. Many offline players were skeptical of online poker and did not think they were "real poker". This attitude changed quickly.
Chris Moneymaker wins WSOP 2003
2003 was a turning point in the history of Poker Stars and online poker. If you take a questionnaire to all the poker players who are now reaching adult age, most of them will say that most of them knew online poker for the first time in 2003. There are many reasons, but all are related to the image of CHRIS Moneymaker, a 2 7-yea r-old accountant from Tennessee, who won the 2003 WSOP main event using Pokerstars satellite. It was difficult to get the best poker hero. Online satellite to the WSOP main event that year was first introduced. The World Series organizer has signed a contract with some websites, including Pokerstars. MANIMAKER, who was playing with the nickname "Money800", did not know the satellite of the WSOP main event, but jumped into a one-table Sit-n-go on a $ 86 bay-in at the last minute. "If you know this, you know. I wouldn't have participated in the tournament.
Moneymaker won the Sit-n-Go and advanced to a $650 final satellite with three tickets to the WSOP Main Event. The fourth-place prize of $8, 205 was more appealing to Chris, as it would have helped him pay off his credit card debt, but a friend convinced him to fight for a trip to Las Vegas, promising him half the Main Event prize of $5, 000. Moneymaker won the ticket, but his friend did not have the money. The organizers only provided $1, 000 for the trip, so Chris sold his share to another friend. The rest of the story is well known: in the Main Event, Chris Moneymaker beat 839 players to win the championship bracelet, turning $86 into $2, 500, 000 in prize money. The video of Moneymaker's victory aired on ESPN for several months, and many players opened accounts on PokerStars and other rooms. The poker boom had begun. Online satellites irreversibly changed tournament poker. Thanks to satellites, the attendance of large offline tournaments increased, amateurs increased in live poker, and the line between "old school" players and "internet players" began to disappear. The following year, Greg Reimer won the WSOP Main Event, also selected through an online PokerStars satellite, and the prize money doubled to $5, 000, 000. By 2006, the number of participants in the WSOP Main Event had increased tenfold to 8, 773, more than 1, 600 of which were selected through PokerStars satellites, and the winner, Jamie Gold, lost a record $12, 000, 000.
WCOOP becomes the biggest tournament series in online poker
But Moneymaker's participation in the victory was not PokerStars' first big success. A year before his victory, when the WPT offline tournament series had just started and the European Poker Tour had not yet begun, Stars hosted the first online tournament, the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), the equivalent of the WSOP.
The series consisted of nine tournaments, with buy-ins starting at $109, a large amount at the time. The most entries (565 players) were in the Limit Hold'em tournament, and the least in the Limit Omaha Hi-Lo tournament (135 players). In the main event, with a buy-in of $1, 050 and 238 participants, Sweden's Multimarine won $65, 450 in prize money.
The 2002 debut WCOOP was a huge success: Pokerstars proved that the online series could compete with the popular live poker festival. After the money maker won, the popularity of the World Championship of Online Poker began to grow than the total prize of the World Series. By 2010, the total prize for the WCOOP main event has increased to $ 12, 200, 000, and the winning prize for the 2010 WCOOP main event "Potterpoker" MARX wins is $ 2, 278, 098, which has continued to this time. These numbers clearly reflect the gaining popularity of online poker around the world and the pace of inflators into the poker economy.
In the early days, WCOOP was sold as an elite poker series, and lo w-limit players had to wait until 2017 to play with WCOOP tournaments with less than $ 100. The expansion of the series to a cheaper tournament was severely criticized by some of the poker communities that felt that the value of the WCOOP brand would be reduced. However, this step could increase the number of participants in the series several times. By 2021, the total number of WCOOP tournaments reached 306, and the total prize money rose to $ 1222, 340, 165.
Until the 2011 Black Friday, most of the winners of the WCOOP tournament were American. Immediately after Pokerstars withdrew from the US market, it fell to fourth place. Poker for a long time had Russians and Braziles.
PokerStars come to offline poker and launch the revolutionary EPT series
In 2004, Pokerstars launched the unique live tournament series, European Poker Tour (EPT). In general, it was thought that this series was an experimental thing that no one knows whether it would succeed, but it was not. The European poker players, inspired by Chris Moneymaker's overseas victory, were eager to hold a major series on their continents. The only lack of financial and ambitious organizers. < SPAN> The 2002 debut WCOOP was a huge success: Pokerstars proved that the online series could compete with the popular live poker festival. Black Friday 2011
Until the 2011 Black Friday, most of the winners of the WCOOP tournament were American. Immediately after Pokerstars withdrew from the US market, it fell to fourth place. Poker for a long time had Russians and Braziles.
How did it all begin
In 2004, Pokerstars launched the unique live tournament series, European Poker Tour (EPT). In general, it was thought that this series was an experimental thing that no one knows whether it would succeed, but it was not. The European poker players, inspired by Chris Moneymaker's overseas victory, were eager to hold a major series on their continents. The only lack of financial and ambitious organizers.
Unlike the WSOP, which is held once a year in Las Vegas, the EPT's debut season ran from September 2004 to March 2005, with seven locations across Europe, spaced one month apart: Barcelona, London, Dublin, Copenhagen, Deauville, Vienna, and Monte Carlo. Thanks to various online satellites, anyone could get a chance to play, and in the following years, young winners of major events such as Jeff Williams, Mike McDonald, Gavin Griffin, and Jason Mercier got this chance. At the time, the buy-in for most European poker tournaments did not exceed €1, 000, and such tournaments attracted around 200 entries. The biggest events featured top American pros, and were well attended, especially when the more lucrative cash games were held, but most tournaments were made up of local players. PokerStars cleverly promoted the EPT as a whole new experience, positioning poker as a game where smart young people compete for big prizes in popular tourist destinations. Luckily, the first season of the series coincided with the beginning of the era of cheap airfare, when many gamers were attracted to the idea of visiting a new town to play poker.
Many innovations in the first EPT season were invented and implemented on the spot. Casino owners and card club managers certainly knew how poker worked, but at the same time, they had never seen so many players. The halls were cramped and chaotic, the small restaurants could not accommodate the rush of snacks during breaks, and the playing days had to be extended by 15-16 hours to complete the smooth structure of the tournament on time.
«Black Friday»: the day when everything stopped
Television coverage was an important part of the marketing, so in the first season, cameras were built into the side tables to show pocket cards, as had been done previously in the WSOP. Although the film crew members had previously worked in dynamic sporting events, here they had to capture the subtle and carefully hidden emotions of poker players. "It was a sport we knew nothing about," admitted Dave Caulfield, one of the first operators of the EPT. To get a better understanding of the rules, the team read the book "Poker for Teapots" during breaks.
The EPT series changed the poker landscape far beyond its geographical borders. It brought old European poker players and young pros from around the world to the same stage, which became the driving force behind the global poker boom. The series was the first live poker experience for hundreds of thousands of online poker players. The EPT played a major role in the emergence of poker superstars such as Patrick Antonius, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospelier, and Justin Bonomo, and quickly became the main tournament series on the planet.
On April 15, 2011, users from around the world viewed images of the top poker rooms of the time, such as Full Tilt, PokerStars, Absolute Poker, and Ultimate Bet, and reported that their domains had been seized by the FBI.
Poker community response
When Chris Moneymaker, a simple accountant from Tennessee who was selected through online qualifiers, won the WSOP Main Event in 2003, the United States, like the rest of the world, was hit by an unprecedented wave of poker popularity. In just a few years, the number of online players and live tournaments increased tenfold. Newcomers honed their skills by playing dozens of games a day, and the most successful ones were able to make a living from it.
In 2006, the US government promulgated the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). The essence of this law was to prohibit the transfer of money to unauthorized gaming sites and to make most types of online gambling illegal. Officially, US authorities thus tried to protect citizens' funds from scammers.
Repercussions
The poker room has responded variously to UIgea. Partypoker, the largest poker venue at the time, immediately stopped American customers. This led to the loss of their leadership. Pokerstars and Full Tilt Poker have decided not to limit American access. Both sites have found a "legal omission" that can avoid UIGea. One of the most important "missing holes" is Daniel Tzvetkoff in the United States, and he has his own company's four major poker rooms (Pokerstars, Fulltilt Poker, Absolute Poker, Unibet Poker). I changed it to something like. TSVETKOFF officially owns a network of a large computer field, and in fact he used these corporate accounts to remit all poker rooms. This continued until the poker room owners began to suspect that he was stealing money. To punish Zvetkov, it has been decided to give information about his tactics to the United States authorities. He was threatened to be up to 75 years, but no one had expected. Zvetkov agreed with the FBI, provided all information on the flow of funds in the online poker room, and was under witness protection. As a result, he was protected by the authorities and was hit by a poker room.
Black Friday Effects on PokerStars
On April 15, 2011, PREET BHARARA, a prosecutor in the southern part of the New York area, made a criminal accusation of 11 poker top executives, and the FBI immediately stopped their website.
Pokerstars lost 26%of the total traffic, and Full Tilt Poker lost 16%. The situation between Absolute Poker and UltimateBet was slightly different. At that time, the Seleus Poker Network, including these two poker rooms, was in the top 10 of the most popular poker venues. Despite being harassed by the U. S. government, they continued to provide services to American players, but did not pay more than 10 % of the drawers. At the poker forum, a panic player buys and sells dollars at a small price in an unfortunate poker room, is convinced that money will not return anymore, and sold a bankroll for 10 cents per dollar. There were many.
Arrest warrants were issued for the founders and financiers of PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker and Absolute Poker/UltimateBet. They were initially charged with illegal online gambling. Then came articles about fraud, financial fraud, money laundering and pyramid schemes (Full Tilt Poker owed players about $390 million, but only had $60 million).
Isaiah Scheinberg’s Story
Naturally, these events could not help but affect ordinary players as well. There were heated discussions on social networks and forums, where people exchanged opinions about the future of online poker. Some people thought that there was no future. But others tried to deal with the situation with humor. It is clear that Daniel Negreana is in the wrong. I told him that if he started winning online, the world would end," wrote Eric Lindgren, owner of two WPT titles and two WSOP bracelets. Many players lost not only their bankrolls, but all of their savings, since they had almost all their money in their poker accounts. The amount could be six figures. Just before Black Friday, I won FTOPS and my account was over a million dollars. I could have withdrawn it for zero," Blair Hinkle admitted.
After online poker in the United States was virtually shut down, most American pros left the country. Many moved to Europe. I made the difficult decision to leave the country I had been living in all my life. I had to break up with my girlfriend, who I loved. I still have six figures in winnings at Full Tilt," - Justin Bonomo later said. Some people could not recover from the financial losses. Chad Batista, a famous poker pro that year who won millions of dollars in online tournaments, fell into a deep depression. By withdrawing, he found an outlet in online poker and felt uncomfortable in live events. Chad also moved to another country, but it was hard for him. The result: he died at the age of 34 from liver and kidney failure caused by alcohol abuse.
The global event "Black Friday" had many consequences. Of course, the main blow fell on the main players in the case. Even if PokerStars finally managed to make a deal with the government and endure a series of financial losses, other participants fared much worse. A few months after the announcement of the indictment, Blanca Gaming, the parent company of Absolute Poker and UniBet Poker, filed for bankruptcy and was forced to lay off all of its employees. Full Tilt Poker, which lost 40% of its traffic and could not recover from debt payments, was eventually sold to the same PokerStars and finally ceased operations in 2021. The online poker market itself has practically disappeared in the United States. Many players have switched rooms, which is still illegal. The remarkable truth is that the authorities "hold their fingers" and only poker rooms are arrested, without charging absolutely innocent players. Since April 15, 2011, the United States has also launched a large-scale campaign aimed at legalizing poker, or at least making it possible to play on any site online. To date, the movement has ensured that a bill for such a decision is already ready in draft, but there is still no real breakthrough, the authorities cannot clearly decide whether to ban online poker or not.
The Manhattan Federal Attorney's Office has indicted Isaiah Scheinberg, the founder of PokerStars, for a series of illegal acts that led to Black Friday 2011, the suspension of PokerStars' activities and the bankruptcy of its main rival, Full Tilt Poker. Ten other people were also indicted in the case, and sooner or later all pleaded guilty.
When the defendants in the case were indicted, Federal Prosecutor Prit Bharara said, "Foreign companies that choose to work in the United States cannot ignore laws they do not like."
After Black Friday, Full Tilt Poker went bankrupt and could not pay $ 330 million to players. BHARARA called FULL TILT as a mouse, but in cooperation with Sheinberg, he searched for a solution. As a result, Pokerstars acquired FULL TILT for $ 731 million, removing Starzov's property claim. The Ministry of Justice returned the bankroll to an American player with the funding, and Pokerstars refunded the bankroll lost by other countries' "Full Tilt" players. Among the online poker players, Scheinberg became a folk hero. However, despite the cooperation of the Full Tilt case, the Federal Prosecutor did not stop pursuing Shineberg. His son marked Poker Stars in 2014 for $ 4. 9 billion. Shineberg's voluntary surrender to US authorities ended one of the most crazy warriors in the Internet history.
First US claims
Sheinberg is a closed person (there are only a few photos and no interviews), but not an ordinary person.
Isai was born in the Lithuania Soviet Union, graduated from the University of Moscow in the 1960s, and moved to Israel, and in 1973 in the Yom Kipur War with Arab countries.
After the military service, he joined the IBM Israel branch office and was invited to the Canadian branch office in Toronto in 1983. Shineberg, an excellent programmer, played an important role in the development and implementation of Unicode, a common common character encoding standard of writing.
As many of the mathematical intellectuals of the same generation said, Shineberg was also an enthusiastic poker player. He especially liked tournaments and participated in the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas in 1996.
Tougher Laws and Attempts to Bypass Poker Rooms
In 2000, Shineberg established PYR software in Toronto and developed and sold software for online poker operators, but could not find customers in the dawn industry. A year later, in the Dotcom Boom, he established an online poker room and a poker stars along with his son's mark. Mark c o-authored the concept and served as a management director of RATIONAL ENTERTAINMENT ENTERPRISES. Like many online gambling competitors, it was in Costa Rica.
The PokerStars Internet platform, operated by Rational, began operating on September 11, 2001, the same day that terrorists hijacked the towers of the World Trade Center in New York. Curiously, about 10 years later, one of the "9/11 heroes" won $1 million during a poker show hosted by PokerStars with Fox. It was former New York City police officer Mike Kosovo, who was one of the first to help those at the World Trade Center. The software developed by Scheinberg's PYR Software and later used by PokerStars featured online tournaments. There were cash games, but it was the PokerStars tournaments that attracted many players. Players could play freezeouts with small funds of less than $25, and had the chance to make a big score without betting a lot of money. Players also enjoyed the tournament format itself, where players were eliminated one after the other until the surviving player handed all their chips over to the winner. In the summer of 2002, PokerStars hosted the first World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), an online version of the World Series of Poker (WSOP).
PokerStars became the second online poker company after Gibraltar-based PartyGaming to dominate the world's largest market, the United States.
However, the US Department of Justice did not allow foreign online poker rooms to operate in the country. It officially stated: Online poker violates the 1961 law prohibiting cross-border wagering (betting across US borders and between states) using wires.
However, Pokerstars and Partygaming continued to provide services to American players. The same was true of the Full Tilt Poker, which was promoted and operated by the famous proposed player, Howard Lederer, CHRIS FERGUSON, and Ray Bitar, a former colleague on the Ferguson stock exchange. These major poker rooms were advertised on television, promoted television broadcasting, and became a sponsor of the top poker players. Ambasador Starzov has become a famous sports star. Tennis players Rafael Nadal, Boris Becker, soccer players Gianlugi Buffon, Ronaldo, and the legend of baseball OREL HERSHISER. For several years in the early 2000s, Pokerstars was advertised on television, and when it was possible to register with a credit card, the U. S. government seemed to be pretending to be unable to see it. The online poker room has argued that the 1961 method applies only to sports betting and does not apply to poker. Another federal law, "illegal gambling", argued that poker is not lucky but not applied. Poker Stars, which moved to Man Island, gained a legal view from a leading law firm in the United States to confirm this legal position. Scheinberg has also moved to Man and forms a Pokerstars technical director.
In March 2006, Calvin Air, a billionaire the owner of Bodog, an offshore online book maker, on the cover of the Forbes magazine. In that issue, he wrote an article "Catch me if you can". Air, the son of a Canadian pig farmer, moved to Costa Rica, raised the sober Bodog into a powerful bookmaker, and began betting from American players. In the article, "Forbes" wrote about Ella's 1 billion states and pointed out that Bodog had violated the 1961 law.
A few months later, the US Congress passed the illegal online gambling law. The law scared of the conservative officers of party gaming, and the company withdrew from a profitable US market. The stock price has fallen and has not recovered since then. In 2009, Partygaming not only provides poker to U. S. online casino players, but also deals with the United States authorities instead of refusing to prosecute and paid a fines of $ 15 million.
Black Friday 2011 for PokerStars
Meanwhile, Shineberg runs a private company that provides only poker to customers. In fact, the illegal online gambling suppression method in 2006 made related monetary transactions, not online gambling itself. As a result, the number of deposits and cash options that Americans use have decreased, but they continued to play on offshore sites. With the withdrawal of PartyPoker, Pokerstars immediately seized the US market and became the world's largest online poker room. Only Full Tilt, who decided to continue cooperative relationships with Americans, had a fierce competition.
Schoenberg hired a former House of Representatives Dick GeFardt as a starslot by the Washington D. C., and by 2010, the room had a $ 500 million and $ 1. 4 billion net income per year.
However, the huge amount of funds handled by Poker Stars continued to be in the spotlight of the Judice, especially the manhattan prosecutor. Prosecutors, led by young AUSA ARLO DEVLIN-BROWN, have found the weaknesses of offshore porkschers. Most banks and credit card companies have refused gambling trading services, so Pokerstars and Full Tilt had to rely on small settlement services that would not hesitate to pay for doubtful payments.
In 2009 and 2010, the federal government seized tens of millions of dollars from a company that manages poker room cash flow. Some of these companies were accused and their assets were seized.
The big scandal was due to the use of a fake MCC code for bank card payments and used for round trips for remittances from players to poker rooms. In order to hide the true purpose of payment from the US issued bank, it seemed that another code was used and paid to the payment of flowers and animal goods instead of poker sites. The technique has been used by Full Tilt since its establishment, which has been useful for rapidly expanding playe r-based, but Pokerstars has always said that this is not the case. < SPAN>, on the other hand, Shineberg run a private company that provides only poker to customers. However, the poker room is in the gray zone instead of the underground, and an influential politician like Bernie Frank is working on legalization of online poker, so the industry is simply costly for the Federal Prosecutor's obstacles. I only thought it was inconvenient. "The federal government is not going to take any action to prevent the collapse of the poker room," said Frank Catania, the top of the New Jersey Gambling Committee and online gambling consultant.

However, on Friday, April 15, 2011, the Federal Prosecutor of Manhattan dropped an atomic bomb in the online poker industry. This day will later be known as a black Friday among poker players around the world. Federal prosecutor PREET BHARARA has issued a prosecution on 11 businessmen, including Sheinberg, Bitar, other Pokerstars, Full Tilt, and Absolute Poker executives. He was also charged with four people who operated the gateway and one bank family. None of them were indicted in the 1961 violation of the telephone ban. Instead, the state has prosecuted Scheinberg for a new illegal gambling law, bank fraud and money laundering crime. However, his son's mark was not charged.
The FBI was originally arrested for three rooms, Pokerstars, Full Tilt, and Absolute Poker. Millions of poker players tried to log in to a traditional Fride Roller, but on the monitor screen was notified that their favorite poker sites were confiscated to the FBI. The player's bankroll has been frozen. The state filed a civil lawsuit against Poker Stars. A few months later, Rod Rosenstein, a federal prosecutor of Baltimore, prosecuted Calvin Eru, the founder of the online book maker BODOG, who may have earned the Black Friday.
If Shainberg was shocked by this development, Balara and his prosecutor's team were also surprised when the Furtilt Poker went bankrupt and paid to $ 330 million in his account. I couldn't hide it. Barara filed civil lawsuit against Ray Bitter, the head of Full Tilt, and his two partners, professional poker players, Howard Reder and Chris Ferguson. The prosecutor complained that the three of them had paid $ 440 million dividends to owners and officers using the player's bankroll. Ferguson has hated the poker community and has missed the WSOP season several times.
- However, Sheinberg saved the Pokerstars players separately and immediately returned $ 150 million in US customers' accounts. One year later, the Pokerstars owner trades with the U. S. Department of Justice, pays a fine of $ 547 million, and pays a fine of $ 184 million to FULL TILT customers, whose accounts have been frozen since the investigation started. I did. Pokerstars replied all the Full Tilt assets. The STARZES and his wife claimed that any misconduct was innocent, but one of the conditions for the transaction was to agree that Sheinberg would not be in the company's senior position anymore.
- In the next few years, Defendants in the Jeonju, except for the Black Friday case, Shainberg, have acknowledged a variety of crimes, from light crimes to bank conspiracy. The longest sentence was the owner of Payment Rock, up to three years. However, the penalties for online poker operators were generally very small. Ray Bitter, the head of the Furtilt, acknowledged the bank fraud conspiring and was released from court due to heart disease, considering the detained time. He also agreed to pay $ 40 million fines. As with Furtilt, Scott Tom, the president of Absolute Poker, who neglected to pay the bankroll to the player. The same goes for Calvin Air, a BODOG flea shop owner who was a billionaire and accepted the bet from American players. He did not appear in the American court, but was even allowed to be charged at a lawyer office in Vancouver, Canada.
- After ISAIAH's son, Mark School, became Pokerstars officially responsible, the room continued to do business on the Islands, but the service to American players stopped. Eventually, Mark frequently received telephone and visit from David Baazov, a young director of a small company that developed online gambling software in Montreal. BAAZOV was trying to acquire Pokerstars with the support of the world's largest private investment company BLACKSTONE Group. At the same time, New Jersey's Gambling Regulatory Authority (later added to Nevada and Delaware), which legalized online poker in 2013 (later joined Nevada and Delaware), because of the relationship with Scheinberg, who wanted to pay a legitimate price for the license. I rejected many times.
- BLACKSTONE negotiators have finally noticed that when seeing Pokerstars's financial status, Scheinberg had built a leading company.
- Even after being expelled from the United States, the room earned $ 400 million a year, reaching $ 1. 1 billion.
- Poker Stars had 89 million registered users, of which about 5 million were visiting the site once a month, so cyber security audits were easily passed. Incredibly, at that time, Stars held 500, 000 online tournaments a day.
- In August 2014, the Sheinberg and his wife sold $ 4. 9 billion to Amaya Gaming supported by Blackstone. Mark Sheinberg received 75%of stocks in cash and became one of the youngest billionaire, the youngest in the world overnight. "Our achievements and this special transaction prove the diligence, abilities, and dedications of employees, which will lead the company to a new success," he said. I emphasized in the letter.
- At first glance, Donald Trump was elected to the U. S. President may have been advantageous for online gambling. He loves gambling and has established a joint venture to provide online gambling. Many other countries are already doing it, and the United States is so late that it should be so, and Trump said about the legalization of online gambling. Legalization seems inevitable, but there is nothing certain in this country. "
However, when Trump entered the White House, his administration began to move in the opposite direction. The Jeff Shasense Ministry of Justice has changed the interpretation of the betting method enacted in 1961 and applies not only betting but also online gambling, especially online poker. The Lottery in New Hampshire filed an objection in court in the decision, and in 2019 the Federal Court ruled that the law would only apply to sports betting. The government has not accepted the ruling, filed an appeal, and is still in dispute.
- Federal prosecutor in Manhattan, led by Jeffrey Berman, has now looked at Shainberg. Apparently his real problem was that he was charged with illegal gambling, not illegal financial transactions. In any case, Issey is now in New York to address him. He was released with a million dollar bail and handed over his passport. Federal prosecutor Olga Zverovic said in a public hearing that the U. S. government and Shainberg had long been negotiated on no n-trial transactions and reached the basic agreement. But he seems to be fine.

First Trauma, Then Calm
In mi d-December 2020, a tennis court north of Costa Rica's Sanhose is the hottest battle of the year. This game is not a former top ranker battle, and the betting is not so high, but the players are doing their best to win.
On one side of the coat, there is a 1 7-yea r-old who spends his school Christmas vacation at vacation spots in Central America. My opponent is a 7 4-yea r-old grandfather, a lucky man who can spend several months in Costa Rica, avoiding the harsh winter of Canada.
My grandfather's motor nerves are far from the peak, but that doesn't make a relaxing excuse. Every time he returns a yellow ball over the net, he feels like a lesson in life. Work hard. To treat people with respect. Fight for what you believe. Anyone who knows this man understands that the granddaughter is impossible to win without gaining a game, a set, or one point.
Isai Shineberg is not like that.
The afternoon, spending in Costa Rica's sun, was the closest time for Scheinberg to take a spotlight. On the poker's worst, Black Friday, 10 years after the company with his and his son's mark was in danger of destruction, Shineberg was ready for the first time in the poker world.
"I valued privacy, but it wasn't a secretism. Shineberg says." I was working hard. I was very busy and went out and promoted. It's not a type. "
Shineberg launched PYR software in 2000, developed online poker tournament software, and provided license to online casinos and sports books. None of the companies that he and Mark sold did not understand the product, or tried to pay much lower than the value they thought.
"I didn't understand that we didn't understand software so much, so we didn't understand that we had a great game. But we had no experience on online games." Burg acknowledges.
Shineberg was 54 years old, retired from IBM and became independent. I couldn't say that I couldn't. The Shineberg couple decided to put their products on their own, not to be a partner who didn't want to work together. Pokerstars. com was born in 2001. Isai led a software company in Toronto, and Mark moved to Costa Rica to operate a gaming business.
From the first day, the market responded to the fact that Poker Stars software was far behind competitors. SCHEINBERG, who loved poker for a long time, focused many of the developments on mult i-table tournaments. Marketing and tournament schedules were also imitated. The first Pokerstars World Championship of Online Poker held in 2002 was nine tournament series, centered on $ 1, 050 ba y-in events. It may seem smaller in terms of the current level, but at that time no one was thinking about online poker tournaments, like Scheinberg.
With the Tennessee accountant, the 2003 World Series of Poker, and ESPN broadcasts, Pokerstars has entered a completely different stratile, and eventually became the world's largest online poker site.
In October 2006, the situation of online poker has first changed significantly in the United States and around the world. The U. S. government has passed the illegal Internet gambling law (Unlawfernet Gambling Enforcement Act). PartyPoker and 888 have withdrawn from the US market, and some major media argued that this law means completely banned online games, including poker in the United States.
Scheinberg was not convinced, and when Pokerstars asked a famous US lawyer for advice, it was clear that UIgea did not ban poke r-like skills games. Pokerstars only provided poker and did not provide casino games like PartyPoker or 888, but in response to these legal views, they decided to continue to provide products to American players. Other poke r-only companies followed this.
The company also began lobbying for federal online poker legislation in the United States to provide clarity to players, companies and investors. PokerStars worked with regulators around the world, securing licenses in several European jurisdictions and reaping the rewards as poker's popularity soared worldwide.
On April 15, 2011, an early morning email changed everything.
The company's lawyers told him that Sheinberg had been indicted by the U. S. Department of Justice and that the company was a defendant in a civil lawsuit. Born in Lithuania and not a native English speaker, he had to ask what the word "indicted" meant. He soon learned that the company he had spent nearly a decade building into a monster was in grave danger.
"It was very traumatic," Sheinberg says. Sitting in PYR Software's Toronto offices, Sheinberg took a deep breath and told his lawyers that rather than panicking about what his own future held, his immediate concern was not the indictment.
I said, 'Look, our number one priority is to pay our players.' We had the money, and we wanted to pay it. The lawyers told me, It will take more than a year. It's not going to happen.' But it was resolved in less than a week," says Sheinberg.
The Sheinbergs tried to make sure the players, his players, understood that they were panicking and that he was going to take care of them.
"One of the first things we did was put out a press release reassuring them that their money was really safe," explains Sheinberg.
Later, in discussions with the Department of Justice, PokerStars made it clear that they wanted to pay players as soon as possible. Deciding that it was in their interest, the Department of Justice agreed that PokerStars would process payments to American players and allowed the company to continue serving players abroad.
Players were not the only ones frightened by what Black Friday meant. About 1, 000 PokerStars employees worked in offices around the world, each with fears that they might lose their jobs soon. Just as they reassured the players, Isai and Mark did their best to reassure their employees.
"The message to the employees was not to lose work," says ISAI. After a few days to weeks, Poker Stars provides employees who work mainly in the United States, providing opportunities to r e-train other fields and skills, and if they want it, at the company. I was able to keep working. The trauma to see his indicted name was not what Scheinberg showed or felt to employees.
Black Friday revealed FULL TILT POKER's financial misconduct and expressed hot light to scammers behind Absolutepoker/UB. Major media around the world took the news and reported as if the three companies were the same. SCHEINBERG is thrilled that there was no regulatory agency in the world where Pokerstars licensed by US accusations.
Eventually, it became clear that Full Tilt could not pay to American players like Pokerstars. FULL TILT's European license was stripped, and Full Tilt completely shut down. The million players who had money on the Full Tilt account faced a scenario that could not be imagined before.
So Shineberg came up with the rescue of a ful l-tilt player. However, his advisor, who had been in negotiating the settlement with the Ministry of Justice, quickly resisted.
"Why don't you buy a full tilt from the government and propose to pay the player? Shineberg asked.
The Gamesman
Shineberg asked: "It's a crazy ... I've never happened before."
Shineberg knew that the US government was negotiating with a third party to sell the frasttilt assets.
"These buyers didn't want to cover the funds paid to the player completely," Shineberg recalls. "The government was under great pressure from US players and overseas players.
Eventually, the government accepted Scheinberg's "Crazy" proposal, Pokerstars purchased the Full Tilt Poker assets from the U. S. government, and made the full amount of American players who had the balance of Full Tilt Poker on Black Friday. 。 Pokerstars also revived Full Tilt's overseas business and paid to players who lost about $ 200 million when the site was closed.
Meanwhile, Scheinberg continues to negotiate with U. S. prosecutors about the charges he faces, and was told he could continue working at PokerStars while those negotiations are ongoing.
"I was called a fugitive, which was very upsetting. I'm not a U. S. citizen or resident, and I haven't been in the U. S. since 1999. I'm not a fugitive from justice, I'm not in hiding."
In 2015, he also met face-to-face with U. S. prosecutors for two days in London. As a result of that meeting, they agreed to drop the bank fraud charges from any future plea deal, but not the gambling charges.
Isai Scheinberg had found a new game to devote this energy to: chess.
All of this is why what happened in June 2019 was surprising. Scheinberg, who has traveled all over the world, including multiple trips to Canada, the U. K., Italy, Israel and the Isle of Man -- all countries that have extradition treaties with the U. S. -- said he always let local authorities know when he was coming, but he never worried about running into trouble overseas.
While vacationing in Switzerland with his wife, Sheinberg was detained by Swiss authorities at the request of the Department of Justice. Although he initially intended to fight extradition, Sheinberg ultimately decided to abandon the proceedings and travel to the United States to settle the case once and for all.
On January 17, 2020, Sheinberg landed at New York's Kennedy Airport, where authorities were waiting for him. He was processed at the airport and immediately taken to court. Sheinberg pleaded not guilty to all charges and was released on $1 million bail the same day, promising not to leave New York.
More than two months later, Sheinberg arrived at a NY courthouse and pleaded guilty to one count of operating an illegal gambling business. The plea made him the last of the 11 Black Friday defendants to plead guilty, and he faced the maximum sentence of five years in prison. However, Scheinberg's lawyers successfully argued that he should not be punished further because he had operated his company in the United States based on legal advice that offering poker was not illegal, he had been in contact with the Department of Justice since 2011, he was active in many charities around the world, and he had paid more than $300 million of Full Tilt's debts. In his ruling, the judge called Scheinberg's actions a "mistake" and sentenced him to time served, releasing him immediately.
For more than nine years, Sheinberg has felt the weight of his Black Friday guilt. He knew it would be resolved one way or another. Now, he can't help but feel the reality of the outcome.
"For example, when the indictment was pending, some banks were hesitant to open accounts for me because, in their mind, you never know when it's over. But when it's over, it's over," Sheinberg says.
As his granddaughter will attest, Sheinberg has a competitive streak that hasn't waned at all. A poker nerd who dreamed of winning a WSOP bracelet long before Chris Moneymaker won the WSOP Main Event, he now has his sights set on a game that has captured the imagination of a whole new generation of players, just as poker did in 2003.
"Today I play a lot of chess. That's what makes me happy.
... When he decided to invest in PokerStars, he wasn't necessarily looking at just the technology or the software, but at who was running the company and whether they shared his values and ideals for running it.
"The reason we invested and joined them is because they are very good people and have business principles of being transparent and honest and taking good care of the customer," says Scheinberg.
As for the hit Netflix series The Queen's Gambit, which helped get the general public interested in chess, Scheinberg can't help but draw parallels with Moneymaker's WSOP Main Event win when it aired on ESPN. Scheinberg is using his experience as a player to inform his ideas for growing the company, just as he did in the early days of PokerStars.
While Scheinberg laughs wryly at the idea of returning to the poker world, he hasn't completely ruled it out. The family sold the company to Amaya in June 2014 for $4. 9 billion. The deal was largely due to the company's failure to obtain a gaming license in New Jersey under their ownership.
The company initially had plans to acquire the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel and offer PokerStars to New Jersey residents through that gaming license. Scheinberg says Black Friday wasn't PokerStars' biggest hurdle in getting a license in the U. S. In early conversations with New Jersey regulators, the company's lawyers asked if there were any legal objections to granting PokerStars a license.
The regulators went to the Department of Justice and asked, "Is there any problem with PokerStars getting a license in New Jersey?" The Department of Justice said there was no problem. So the regulators came back and said to our lawyers, "Of course, we're going to check it like any other company, so we can't guarantee it." "Obviously, there are no guarantees, but competitors were complaining loudly from all sides and slowing the process down." New Jersey Gaming Enforcement officials had plane tickets to come to the Isle of Man to interview (PokerStars executives). And they canceled at the last minute."
Scheinberg says pressure from those competitors, directed at both DGE and the owners of the Atlantic Club casino, led to the deal collapsing. Despite private assurances that PokerStars' license would be fine, the company would face the same hurdle after signing a deal with Resorts Casino for a second property.
"This time, we didn't buy (the casino), but we did contract to offer our poker product," Scheinberg says. "DGE came in at the last moment and said no. It was unexpected, and the announcement (from DGE) was very unclear. They said there were some conditions.
Scheinberg was told he had to settle or "make major changes to the company." Then Sheinberg's fortunes began to shift again.
"At that time, we thought," What, let's get out of it. " For the company, it is necessary to change the ownership so that American players can play with Pokerstars. Various thoughts overlapped, but that triggered and couldn't get a license, "said Shineberg.
CHEINBERG has already reported that Pokerstars intends to launch with Amaya and his ambitious CEO, David Baazov, and that Pokerstars will launch in New Jersey. There was no choice but the two companies had to negotiate, and eventually the clan sold the company. The $ 4. 9 billion profits were not all to the clan, and their share was the same. Those who have been working for the Poker Stars for many years and did not have a company share said that after the sale, ISAI and Mark were very generous. For them, it was to value the people who cooperated with the establishment of Pokerstars.
"We always operated the company like that, of course, elegance and elegance were the most important thing. After Black Friday, no one was fired and the employees succeeded. "The employees were part of the business, but it is a very important part of our company. I was. "
- Even now, 10 years after Black Friday, Isai Shineberg is regrettable for that day. (Andrew Burton photographed)
- Seven years after the company sale, Scheinberg looks back on the days spent in the poker industry, believing that the philosophy of running the company in good and bad will be his heritage.
- "We have made a lot of things that have grown, more respected, and more fun." And we paid to the players and players did not lose money (in black Friday). The fact was very important for the player and the right thing.
- Poker's most eternal and lovable brand owner was likely to be another pillar of the Shineberg story. < SPAN> "At that time, we thought," What, let's get out of it. " For the company, it is necessary to change the ownership so that American players can play with Pokerstars. Various thoughts overlapped, but that triggered and couldn't get a license, "said Shineberg.

The end of an era
"In fact, I was invited to get the acquisition of Rio Casino for a while. If I think about it, I think it was a mistake. Shineberg says. "Probably, we did a lot of things to make the players very friendly. I was going to increase the prize pool. I guaranteed the main event pool to $ 100 million, and various things around it. In March 2011, he was so excited that he would move to a better facility.
Since Harrah's acquired World Series of Poker in 2004, the relationship between Pokerstars and World Series of Poker would be the best way to describe a competitive rivalry. Last November, Scheinberg was selected as one of the 10 final candidates in the Poker Hall of Fame. Former Team Poker Stars Pro, a poker world, including Daniel Negreanu, who is currently in the Hall of Fame, has been in the lobby activities, but WSOP, which manages PhoF, has listed SCHEINBERG as the final candidate. It was the first time.
"There were a number of people trying to make me enter the Hall of Fame. I have never been a lobby, but Harraz and Caesters were not our big friends, but it was surprising (nominated). The fact that the trial has settled is one of the reasons, "said Shineberg.
