ASA Ruling on PPB Counterparty Services Ltd t/a Paddy Power

A Paddy Power radio ad aired on March 12, 2022, and featured a conversation between a father and a potential son-in-law. At the beginning of the ad, the father-in-law said: “Yes, I’m going to ride.” The son-in-law said: “Cheltenham is this week, do you want to ride?” The son-in-law replied: “Well, just with my daughter.” After this exchange, the sound of glass breaking was heard. Then, a voice-over said: “Did you miss your chance?” The plaintiff, who considered the ad to be degrading to women, challenged whether the ad was offensive and harmful. PPB Counterparty Services Ltd t/a Paddy Power stated that it did not consider the ad to be degrading to women or to imply ownership over women, and therefore did not consider the ad to be seriously or widely offensive. They stated that the ad depicted a "meet your parents" scenario and was light-hearted and satirical, deriving humour from innocent insults using commonly known slang. The remarks about horse riding were made in the context of the Cheltenham Festival and the man's reaction was a humorous depiction of the stress of meeting his future father-in-law and the possibility that his reaction might be misinterpreted by him.

Issue

Paddy Power stated that it did not consider that the ad conveyed harmful gender stereotypes, that no comparison was drawn between the sexes and that there was no suggestion that the use of the term "ride" was specifically female.

Response

The use of the word "my" also did not indicate ownership as challenged in the complaint. They stated that in the context of the ad, when a parent refers to their child, they considered that the term was used as a term of endearment and as a pet name between parent and child. They consulted two dictionary definitions to show that the word is used to refer to someone's family or someone who is very close to the speaker.

They said the ad was for the Cheltenham Festival and would not be used in future marketing campaigns.

The Radio Center thinks that this scenario is a harmless joke that makes the fathe r-i n-law's question an unintended reply, and that his fathe r-i n-law is offended but offended. I mentioned. In the context of asking if someone would ride a horse (at the time of the Cheltnam Festival), they thought that riding with their daughter "together" would not mean having sex.

He also said that the use of "My Olivia" is a friendly expression of affection for "my daughter" and does not suggest the ownership of women by men.

The ASA uses the commonly understood situation that this advertisement is anxiety about the inappropriate behavior when he first met a partner's family, and to explain the scenario. I thought it used sexual nuances related to. We have acknowledged that this humor is derived from words that are commonly used as a slang word that does not identify gender. However, some of the listeners may have felt uncomfortable with this expression, but we are relatively calm, and it is unlikely that it will give you a serious discomfort and extensive discomfort. I thought.

We believed that my Olivia phrase was used to establish a relationship between my father and daughter and supplement the background of the situation. We use ownership to define family relationships, specifically, two men can interpret this ad as paternal or gender by talking about women. I admitted that there was. However, I thought that the word "my Olivia" would be interpreted in this example as a close relationship between my father and daughter.

Furthermore, some listeners interpret them as depicting a gender stereotype that is sexually subject to women, and the fact that the father approves dating and marriage will affect the future of the daughter. We also examined whether there could be interpreted as having. However, as described above, this ad is that it will be accepted as being able to receive the intimate relationship between the father and daughter, and the anxiety of the so n-i n-law in an awkward situation, and depicts harmful gender stereotypes. I didn't think.

Assessment

From the above, it was determined that this ad was unlikely to cause serious or widespread discomfort or harm. < SPAN> Radio Center thinks that this scenario is a harmless joke that makes a reply to his fathe r-i n-law's question with an unintended son, and is offended that his fathe r-i n-law is not offended. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump sparred over abortion, the state of American democracy, and the 2020 election during Tuesday's ABC News presidential debate in Philadelphia. Here are some key moments, including one in which moderator David Muir fact-checked one of Trump's claims.

Kamala Harris is 6 Exorcising the ghost of the moon. After embarrassing and deflecting Donald Trump in a televised debate, she finally hit the landing spot that famously let her boss escape.

It was the fatal cognitive lapse that ultimately curtailed President Joe Biden's career when, in a June debate, he lost his train of thought and falsely boasted that he had killed the public health insurance program that seniors cherish: I defeated Medicare.

The same message delivered by the vice president on Tuesday sounded more coherent: We allowed Medicare to negotiate drug prices.

By this point, the debate was halfway through, Democrats were feeling dizzy, Republicans were raging about a biased moderator, and Harris had slightly improved her chances of becoming president.

'First, let me respond to the rallies'

Trump and Harris accused each other of lying in the presidential debate. The moderator was ready with the facts (new window).

At the underground watching party in North Carolina, her supporters showed a relief at the late summer debate, which canceled the early summer catastrophe.

I was disappointed. Yana Witman in Ashville said about the June Biden debate. now? She is doing a great job. She is bothering (playing cards)

She especially refers to Harris dropping a small ego mine on Trump. He mentioned the supporters leaving his rally and the leaders in the world who ridiculed him.

Trump couldn't help jumping in to protect his pride. Instead of discussing the border, he said: First, let me respond to the rally. " There are the largest rally in political history, incredible rally.

He talked to the possibility of World War, spread the conspiracy theory that immigrants eat people's pets, and finally returned to the start: again.

The border should have been the theme of his victory. Harris has raised many times, the belief that Trump cares about himself, not ordinary people. She r e-complained to Trump that the 2020 election was stolen, defending the supporters who attacked the Federal Council on January 6, 2021.

Moderator fact-checks Trump’s claim that illegal immigrants are ‘eating the pets’

Some Republican members claimed that they felt good on Tuesday. Mr. Trump published an unscientific opinion poll one after another, and his fans declared his victory.

Republicans fume at moderators

Especially thre e-o n-one! Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social.

This refers to that the moderator has corrected him many times. For example, when the Haiti immigrant in Springfield, Ohio, accused him of eating pets: they are eating dogs. They are eating dogs.

This was based on a flimsy social media post linked to a town that had a real influx of undocumented immigrants.

After Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed that illegal immigrants were eating dogs and cats in Springfield, Ohio, ABC News presidential debate host David Muir said the city manager told ABC News there were "no credible reports" of such incidents.

The ABC host said the network had checked with the mayor, who responded that there were no reports of pets being kidnapped for food. Trump replied that he'd seen it on TV.

  • It's true that the host was just correcting Trump. They didn't step in to challenge Harris when she quoted Trump out of context, including her recent prediction that the auto sector would be a bloodbath because of Democrats' trade policies on electric vehicles.

Harris suggested he was threatening political violence.

Unfortunately, we had a clearly biased moderator. "I fact-check Donald Trump all the time, but I never said any of the bullshit that the vice president said," Trump's new campaign ally Robert Kennedy Jr. told Newsmax.

But two Republican panelists on CNN later admitted: Trump had a bad night. One used a basketball analogy, saying there's no point complaining about the referee if you don't make the shot.

Trump briefly pressed Harris about some of the left-wing policies she put forward in her failed 2020 campaign.

‘Bleeding out in a car’ due to abortion restrictions is not what America wants, Harris says

For example, abortion. Trump is wondering how to treat abortions in the second term.

Confrontation on abortion

Trump evaluated that he had appointed a judge who had an end to the Lo w-t o-Wade trial, and stated that it had given the government's wishes, that is, the state of settling this issue.

The government, and Donald Trump, certainly should not give a woman in order to do what women do, "said the Democratic President Camala Harris at the ABC News presidential debate held on Tuesday in Philadelphia. I talked.

Harris blamed him violently. She introduced a woman who suffered from a result of miscarriage and a doctor who was afraid and could not intervene.

She is bleeding in the car in the parking lot. She didn't want it. My husband didn't want it. A 1 2-yea r-old or 1 3-yea r-old woman who is an incest survivor is forced to continue pregnancy? Harris says.

Talking about the raid of the Federal Congress on January 6, Harris spoke directly to the Republican Republican voter who is tired of the event.

Debates don't always mean much

She skipped a joke that Trump was fired by 81 million voters and had a hard time processing it. And calling on a Republican authority to support her: You also have a place. For the country. For democracy. For the rule of the law. ...... Let's stop going back. "

This was part of a clear sales to the Nakamichi and some Nakamichi righ t-wing voters. Harris said he was the owner of the gun and promised not to confiscate the firearms.

She showed off the recent recor d-priced petroleum production. It was only this moment that booing at the Democratic watching party.

She boasts that she has gained the support of the Republican Vice President Dick Chainnie, and talks about voting in the Senate in 2017 to follow Barak Obama's Medical Insurance Law. The candidate was called "Great John McCane".

Now, a simple confirmation of reality to the Democratic Democratic members of the Democratic Party.

The post-Belichick Patriots may not be the dumpster fire we expected

New England have lost an all-time great quarterback and coach over the last few seasons, but there are encouraging signs on the rebuild

Debate performance is not necessarily a predictor of electoral success. In 2016, polls showed Hillary Clinton won the first (new window), second (new window), and third (new window) debates against Trump. Afterwards, she enjoyed a slight uptick in approval ratings (new window).

Such contests tend to move the polls in the winner's favor by a point or two. It's sometimes a fleeting mirage, as supporters of the so-called winning debater briefly get excited about talking to pollsters (new window). For example, Mitt Romney in 2012 appeared to have the upper hand in his first debate with Obama, as did Clinton in 2016, but then lost the election.

This makes Biden's crushing defeat in June unusual (new window). That clumsy performance was the most influential TV debate in U. S. history and led to the end of the campaign.

After Tuesday, it feels more like distant history.

The post-Bill Belichick era for the New England Patriots started off with a flourish. The Patriots hit the road on Sunday and beat the highly-anticipated Cincinnati Bengals, 16-10. New coach Jerrod Mayo, a Belichick protégé turned successor, was doused in Gatorade in his debut. The Patriots were eight-point underdogs, and the win was the most surprising result of Week 1.

On one level, life for the Patriots after Belichick was looking bleak. Belichick, who led the Patriots to six Super Bowls, is doing a stint as a broadcaster this year. But through a different lens, the Patriots of old were gone when Brady left in free agency in 2020. When the Patriots parted ways with Belichick after last season and hired Mayo, his former linebacker and assistant coach, there was nothing left to be done. At that point, a fresh start was the only logical choice.

MVP of the week

The Patriots may still have a long way to go, but Mayo's first game couldn't have gone any better. Drake Maye, the No. 2 overall draft pick, will remain the team's backup quarterback for a little while longer, waiting and watching behind journeyman Jacoby Brissett, who started as Brady's backup in 2016 and is now back in Massachusetts after stints with four other teams. Brissett wasn't great (15-for-24 passing for 121 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions) but he was competent. Rhamondre Stevenson carried 25 times for 120 yards and scored the team's lone touchdown.

More surprising was how New England's defense put the Bengals in the blender. The Patriots looked destined for a lost season in mid-August after trading talented edge rusher Matthew Judon to the Atlanta Falcons for a third-round pick next year. But the Patriots' remaining players put in an inspired performance against two standouts in quarterback Joe Burrow and receiver Ja'Marr Chase and the rest of the Cincy offense. Chase had a 28-yard catch but was otherwise limited. Burrow barely found an open receiver down the field, throwing 29 times for just 164 yards. The Bengals couldn't really establish a run game, with tailback Zack Moss (9 carries, 44 yards) getting face-sitting at home.

It can't stay so bad for the Bengals. No. 1 wideout Tee Higgins was out with a hamstring injury, and his return should be a positive. But the team was shockingly lackluster, and a comprehensive reset will be needed for a season that began with high ambitions.

The Patriots, meanwhile, entered 2024 with no such aspirations. Their realistic goal was to at least improve on last year's 4-13 record and see strong development from Maye, their vaunted QB of the future. It's too early to revise expectations upward, but every week the Patriots win a game while letting Maye watch and learn is a good one. And this franchise hasn't seen many good days lately.

Elsewhere around the league

Baker Mayfield (quarterback, Tampa Bay Buccaneers). Mayfield was one of last season's comeback stories, going from scrap heap to franchise QB for the Bucs. After leading the team to the divisional round of the playoffs, Tampa rewarded the Cleveland Browns product with a three-year, $100 million contract. Mayfield provided a nice return with impressive numbers in the first game of that contract: 24-of-30 passing for 289 yards and four touchdowns in a 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders. Mayfield will never be an All-Pro passer, but he looks a lot better (and certainly a better bargain) than the guy the Browns picked over him in 2022: Deshaun Watson. Mayfield doesn't seem to regret the Browns cutting ties with him.

18. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons were limited to just 10 points on Sunday. All of Pittsburgh's points came from the right foot of kicker Chris Boswell, who went 6-for-6 on field goals. Though the Steelers never found the end zone, Boswell tied the franchise record for field goals made with kicks from 57, 51, 44, 56, 40 and 25 yards. That may not have been the most impressive thing about Boswell's afternoon: Pittsburgh punter Cameron Johnston was injured in the fourth quarter, and a penalty on the play forced Boswell to immediately leave the game and replace Johnston as punter. Boswell's first career punt went 43 yards for a net 40, giving the Pittsburgh defense a crucial cushion from a one-point deficit. Few kickers have had such a great day.
