China's emerging industries are a treasure trove of new opportunities for foreign investors and businesses. These industries, which hold the key to China's future economic prosperity, are supported by supportive and preferential policies and have great growth potential. Here, we outline business opportunities in five emerging industries in China.
China's drive to develop new and emerging technologies is bringing many new opportunities for foreign investors and businesses. This drive is centered on a shift to an innovation-led growth model, most recently represented by concepts such as new quality productive force (NQPF), new industrialization, and "future industry."
The NQPF, which is at the heart of China's economic agenda beyond 2023, prioritizes the development of cutting-edge technologies such as AI, robotics, biotechnology, and new energy and new materials to enhance international competitiveness and economic growth. Meanwhile, the new industrialization initiative, another core of China's growth strategy, complements the NQPF by promoting advanced manufacturing, secure supply chains, and technological self-sufficiency, positioning China as a leader in high-tech sectors. Meanwhile, "Future Industries" focuses on emerging technologies that are still in the early stages of development, such as quantum computing and 6G networks. Both strategies reflect China's broader goal of driving economic growth through innovation and leadership in frontier industries.

The Chinese government has further outlined the strategic field of AI development through various policy documents, including accelerating scenario and innovation acceleration and hig h-quality economic development acceleration of artificial intelligence. These opinions published by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) in 2022 encourage dee p-hearted AI applications in major industries such as smart manufacturing, agriculture, logistics, finance, and home automation. For example, in the manufacturing industry, AI is given priority to industrial brains, robot support processes, and machine vision scenarios. In agriculture, AI applications are wide, from satellite navigation to smart farm management, and logistics innovation focuses on intelligent warehouse management and robot support. Various application scenarios in these industries provide multiple entry points that bring expertise, skills, and investment to companies.
Commitment to AI ecosystem led by companies and innovation will strengthen China's supported policy environment. The government encourages private companies to take the initiative in scenario innovation, and is at the forefront of AI application development, resource sharing, and demonstration projects.- In addition, China is actively promoting foreign investment in AI fields, including smart devices, neural network chips, and neuron sensors, and these are published in the 2022 Fi Encouragement Catalog. 。 Such an advantageous policy environment is a great opportunity for foreign companies to utilize the expanding AI market for foreign companies, including tax incentives such as 15 % of corporate income tax reduction rates for companies in certain development zones. 。
- China is strategically focusing on the development of quantum computing and is actively investing in and developing this cutting-edge technology, which presents great opportunities for foreign companies. In a set of implementation opinions on promoting innovation and development of future industries issued in January 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) positioned quantum computing as a "signature product" that should be developed by 2025. Specifically, it calls for all efforts to advance fault-tolerant quantum computing technology, improve error correction in physical hardware and algorithms, and promote the integration of quantum software and cloud platforms. The overarching goal is to harness the unique advantages of quantum computers, promote their application in various industries, and position China as a leader in this emerging field.
- The quantum computing field in China is also growing rapidly and is likely to expand significantly in the coming years. According to the China Business Industry Research Institute, the country's quantum communications market will grow from RMB 42. 5 billion (US$5. 97 billion) in 2019 to RMB 70. 9 billion (US$9. 96 billion) in 2022, a compound annual growth rate of 17. 3%. Forecasts suggest that the market will continue to expand, reaching approximately RMB 89. 2 billion (US$12. 53 billion) in 2024.
- China's progress in quantum computing technology has been marked by significant breakthroughs, placing the country at the forefront of global innovation. Notable achievements include the development of a prototype quantum computer, JiuZhang 3, which is said to have broken records in 2023. The computer has a computing speed that is one million times faster than conventional computers. Furthermore, in 2024, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) completed a record-breaking 504-qubit superconducting quantum computer chip.
- The Chinese government actively encourages foreign investment in the quantum computing field as an overview of the "2022 Fi Encouragement Contents", which includes research, development, and manufacturing of quantums and neuromobic computing systems. I am. Quantum computing is also encouraged by a preferential policy in specific fields, such as reduced corporate tax rates of 15 % of companies that operate in designated areas such as the deep cooperation of Yokotohiro Macau.
