Safe Sound Protocol SSP Step by Step Counseling
Safe and Sound Protocol
The protocol is a soun d-based (hearing) intervention developed based on Dr. Steven Project's Polygal theory. SSP is designed to support social involvement and emotional adjustment. In the SSP, we listen to specially processed music and hearing stimuli designed to stimulate the stray nerves and adjust the autonomic nervous system. SSPs can strengthen or promote occupational therapy, physiotherapy, language therapy, and mental health therapy, but the main purpose of SSP is to improve social communication, emotional adjustment, and overall happiness. 。 The purpose of SSP is to reduce stress, anxiety, and emotional adjustment disorder. Hearing stimuli used in SSP is considered to help calm the nervous system by promoting SES than the sympathetic nerve and the back struggle reaction.
There are the following two elements.
- Build a safe situation that is given to hearing-this is managed by the provider and caregiver-In order to be effective, the nerve system of the listener is needed in a safe state. 。
- Providing acoustic characteristics that function as a nerve movemen t-this is provided by clinicians.
There are various reasons why individuals and families can consider completing the Safe and Sound Protocol. The following is an example of what the benefits of listeners:
- Social communication and relationship: SSP is aimed at promoting emotions such as safety, trust, and connection with others by stimulating the stray nerves through hearing stimulation. This improves the ability to form social interaction, communication, and healthy relationships. In addition, some people experience improving attention and concentration as a result of SSP. Helping the nervous system makes it easier to concentrate and maintains attention to work. < SPAN> This protocol is a soun d-based intervention based on Dr. Steven Project's Polygal theory. Adjustment of physiological and emotions: SSPs try to improve emotional adjustment by ensuring better emotional reactions to stress factors and trigas. By promoting a balanced autonomic nerve system, SSP reduces emotional reactions so that it can respond to difficult situations more calmly and more effectively. Furthermore, the hearing stimulus used in SSP aims to calm the nervous system and reduce stress and anxiety emotions. By suppressing the struggle and fleeing reaction of the sympathetic nervous system, SSP can help individuals experience a more calm and relaxed sensation. SSP shows the possibility of supporting those who have experienced trauma. By promoting the sense of security and adjustment in the nervous system, SSP can support emotional healing and recovery from trauma experiences.
- Sound sensitivity and hearing processing: SSP is effective for those who have difficulty in hearing. The aim is to provide carefully treated hearing stimuli, to improve the ability of the brain to treat and interpret hearing information, to improve the understanding of hearing and improve the processing ability. In addition, SSP can have a positive effect on sensory integration, which helps to treat sensory information more efficiently and reduce sensitivity and disgust.
- Why use a safe and sound protocol?
- We strongly believe that SSP can be made faster and gain greater profits by combining SSPs with other services such as language therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, trauma treatment, and personal guidance. This protocol has made a major change to many listeners we have been involved in.
- Stress, trauma, and other situations make our nervous system overloaded, struggling, escaping / freezing. The following improvement can be expected:
- Spontaneous conversation
- Hearing sensitivity
- Adjustment of emotions
- ANS adjustment
- Increase in social involvement
- According to feedback from those who completed the protocol, it seems that daily interactions have changed. The following are the direct content they are reporting:

- We understand that SSP can have a financial impact on any family and put a strain on their finances. As you know, physical and mental health conditions can have a significant impact on a person's life, including their ability to work, form relationships, and perform daily activities. Without proper treatment, health conditions can deteriorate over time and become more difficult and expensive to treat. While the financial sacrifices may be difficult to make in the short term, the long-term benefits of treatment can be immeasurable.

This protocol was developed by Dr. Stephen Porges and is based on his Polyvergal Theory, which is derived from 40 years of research into the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and social-emotional processes. SSP was designed to reduce stress and hyperacusis and increase social engagement and resilience. This intervention can boost or facilitate other therapies such as counselling, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
How does it work?
The top priority of our brain and body is to maintain life. When the body and the brain feel threatened or feel, our nervous system shifts to a defensive state (struggle, escape, freezing). When the nervous state remains in a chronic defense, it affects our feelings, ideas, and connecting people. This can adversely affect our health and how to experience the world surrounding us. Our emotions and physiological conditions are important in how to approach various situations. The better the adjustment, the better treatment results. Adjustment and calm will balance our physiological and emotional systems so that the client can be relieved. This intervention is known as passive. In other words, as long as the client is calm and safe, as long as you are concentrated on music, just listening can benefit the client. But this intervention is not passive! A shift is occurring in the autonomic nervous system and the stray nervous system. While the child is listening to music, it is strongly recommended that parents and caregivers are present and actively work together. It's a great opportunity for your family to have time to have no time to interrupt your loved ones. < SPAN> The top priority of our brain and body is to maintain life. Without active middle ear muscles, low frequency sounds (background noise) are perceived as stronger than human speech. Middle ear muscles are primarily fast twitch muscles and easily fatigue. Disease and aging also reduce the function of middle ear muscles. When the middle ear muscles function normally, background noise is attenuated and the nervous system is less activated, making it easier to prevent flight/fight/freeze. Listeners can concentrate and more easily hear human speech (higher frequencies). Listening is connected to the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is the internal control center for processing and responding to cues and signals from the environment. The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system, running from the brain stem to the large intestine. The vagus nerve is the longest nerve in the autonomic nervous system, running from the brain stem to the large intestine. The ventral vagus nerve (front) activates when we feel safe in our environment and connected to others. The dorsal vagus nerve (back) activates when we are in a life-threatening situation or when we are in flight/fight/freeze. The vagus nerve helps regulate blood pressure, digestion, and heart rate. As the body monitors and receives information, the vagus nerve processes these signals/cues from the environment and determines how to respond. SSP moves clients from a state of hyperarousal (fight or flight, defensive, cautious, tense) to a sense of safety and calm. What and how you listen affects how your body responds.
SSP is designed to stimulate the nervous system by exercising and systematically challenging the auditory system with specially processed or filtered music. This intervention uses filtered prosodic music to train the muscles of the middle ear to focus on the frequencies found in human speech. Music trains the auditory pathways by focusing on the frequencies of human speech. Sometimes music may sound faint or difficult to hear because it has been filtered and the lower frequencies have been removed.
When a client learn to process voic e-related frequencies, the function of the two brain nerve improves. First, the skull nerve VII focuses on human voices and helps adjust unrelated frequency. The skull nerve X enables regulation of the autonomic nervous system. If the client's ove r-awakening state (struggle or escape) decreases, the socia l-related system will work properly. In short, the SSP aims to calm the child's nervous system and enable clients to be more social.
Research suggests that attention, status adjustment, and social involvement will be improved. Following the SSP protocol, ideally, children are more emotional and physiological, so they can concentrate more in schools, treatments, and daily life. From research in various clinical trials, many neurodism and mental diseases have reduced socia l-related systems, excessive excitement of the autonomic nervous system, hearing hypersensitivity, and people's voices. It has been shown that there are common behavioral characteristics such as the difficulty of blocking.
With calmness or sel f-adjustment, the client has the ability to listen, maintains concentration, and be able to be socially involved with others. Such a client can incorporate and process what is needed to go to social situations. The Polygal theory shares the recognition that children are difficult to handle social interactions and utterances. According to this theory, when the child's emotional condition is stressed, the nervous system works excessively to adjust and calm it. As a result, it affects the ability to be aware and learn from the social interactions, such as reading emotions and processing words.

SSPs can be carried out by experts who participated in training. Our office has one person who is qualified to do this. Note: This protocol is not an alternative to other therapy. Currently, the full version of the thre e-stage digital / remote SSP is provided to all providers. When making a reservation, the SSP provider explains how this technology works, what is expected, and logistics. There is an app, and SSP providers can create and manage accounts through the app. SSP providers can create and manage accounts through apps. While the applications of the SSP are still being explored, these are the experiences currently represented in case studies:
- What is required for the remote/ digital version:
- Internet or data for accessing the app
- Device for accessing a specific app. The SSP participant's account is set through an app that can be downloaded to the terminal. When the app is downloaded and enabled, SSP participants download the playlist.
- At the time of listening, SSP participants must wear a circum oral (ea r-type) headphones. If you have a noise canceling function, the participants must turn it off. Bass enhanced headphones are no longer recommended. We recommend SSP headphones or them. (Click here for ILS adults, here are ILS children, here or here) ILS states that ear pot type, o n-i n-type, or noise canceling headphones are not recommended.
- Some headphones require a special adapter to connect to the equipment selected by the customer.
- Some customers have been frustrated using wireless headphones.
- SSP applicants need to contact the office to take an intake session. In this virtual SSP intake session, parents or caregivers explain what the SSP is, how to prepare SSP, and fill in the evaluation scale. After an intake session, parents and children (or adult clients) agree that SSP providers and families are suitable for moving forward, promises a fiv e-hour listening.
- The office is trying to find a 5-hour schedule for SSP. Early research on effects showed that it is effective to do one hour or five days a day, but in the current feedback, there are other other effective pacing schedules. It is shown. The therapist can help find something that suits you. Some people listen for 30 minutes, others listen for 15 minutes, and some listen shorter. There is only a way that feels safer for the nervous system.
- Those who receive SSP intervention are accompanied by a safe person. This is parents and spouses. During the intervention time, they do not have a word conversation, but they can choose to do many creative activities together. During the session, the SSP provider is observed through Google Meet, providing feedback, guidance and instructions as necessary through the chat function to the "safe" person in the room.
- When the client has a remote session, the person receiving the SSP intervention is accompanied by a safe person and confirms with the SSP provider between the listening session. During the SSP process, if there is any change in the field of energy, digestion, sleep, mood, concentration, sensitivity to sound, social skills, etc., client portal messages, emails, or virtual It is required to contact each other by fac e-t o-face connection. This allows us to understand how your body and nervous system is reacting and inform you whether the original treatment plan is needed.
- SSP providers can also be used through a ste p-b y-step counseling client portal on the day of listening to answer questions and concerns that may appear after listening sessions. SSP participants will not be charged an additional charge for this service. SSP providers can provide support through protocols:
- Preparation for expecting
Determine the optimal pace and adjust the plan as needed.
Preparation, awareness, support for changes
Providing involvement and activities during protocol
How do I know if the SSP is right for me?
Proposal of involvement and activity between listening sessions
- After the listeners have finished each schedule, please fill out your parent or caregiver.
- Note: Not all clients are suitable for the remot e-an d-sound protocol remote. Some clients, especially the adult client who have a trauma history, requires personal personal presentation to get safety and best results. Not suitable for remote/ remote SSPs includes an unstable family, a trauma, and a negative life event such as death, divorce, and unemployment. Other reasons are that they have recently been injured in their heads, medically unstable, sel f-harm and suicide desire.

Advantages of Safe and Sound Protocol
Make the most of the safe and sound protocol
🤔 Curious what else you should know before trying the SSP?
Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a treatment program that uses specially filtered music to support the regulation of the nervous system and promote happiness.
Is there anyone who shouldn’t do the SSP?
The nervous system has a lot of impact on human mental health and happiness, so SSP is useful in many situations, including trauma, anxiety, sensory sensitivity, and emotional adjustment disorders.
SSP was developed by Dr. Steven Poses (researchers in Polygal theory).
SSP is considered to be effective by working on the middle ear connected to the stray nerve.
The stray nerve plays an important role in the parasympathetic nervous system (which is a nervous system that controls "rest and digestion", which helps to adjust the body after high activity and stress).
Music is filtered to include only tones and frequencies related to safety. In contrast to a hig h-frequency and low frequency reminiscent of more threatening things, such as crying, lingering voices, sirens, and shouts, the sounds of these medium ranges mimic a normal voice.
By playing this filtered music at a low volume, the muscles of the middle ear are encouraged to work a little strongly to synchronize with these external safety signals.
For those who are hypersensitive and activated, for example, for those who are "stuck in" in a struggle, escape reaction, and autonomic nerve feedback loop, this shifts us from the actual demand for threats to a easier state. It may be done. This is part of the stray nerve, which can also affect the socia l-related system that responds to the emotions of safety and connection.

By examining what happens in our body and nervous system when a sense of security is threatened, we can understand how we feel, act, and connect with others.
What is particularly important in polybagal theory is the autonomic nervous system. The nervous system generally helps maintain important functions for survival, especially the autonomic nerve system that connects the most important functions of the brain and body.
How will I know if it’s working?
Among them, ANS plays a role in supporting us in dangerous times, as seen in the reaction of the "struggle or escape" known as the sympathetic nervous system.
ANS, known as a parasympathetic nervous system, helps us return to "rest and digestion" after stressful events.
The stray nerves are the longest nerves in the body, starting with the brain trunk and extending to the large intestine.
Some positive shifts you may notice with the SSP include:
- The stray god is like a bridge that connects the mind and the body. When the stray god is signaled from the external environment, the stray god returns to the brain, ultimately leads to a state of activation, and escapes from the activated state.
- For this reason, the stray god is not only in our physiological function, but also for our mental health and emotional happiness, as suggested by Polygal theory.
- Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) gives external safety signals to the stray nerves, and the nerve system can support the stiffness more easily and to establish safety. Use.
- See Dr. Poses's research for Polygal theory.
- SSP is best understood as an application of polygal theory.
- Although research on the specific application of Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is very limited, know that the theory that supports this intervention and the research that is useful for its use itself is not new. Is important.
- The most notable is that stimulating the stray nerve has a positive effect on mental hygiene and can affect physical health. The stray dialogue is the main nerves of the parasympathetic nervous system, and it helps to rest after being activated and stressed to sel f-adjust.
- Nevertheless, Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a relatively new treatment. A patent that could be accessed online was submitted in 2017. It will still take years to get the depth and width of the available research on other modalities and interventions.
- Many early research on SSPs focus on autism, but some of the defenders of autism are fully opposed to this application.
- UNYTE, a platform that distributes protocols and trains practitioners, regularly publishes case studies for practitioners on SSP results.
- These case studies are different from research surveys, but will be useful for knowing how safe and healthy protocols are currently being used (the possibility that the bias of positive results is applied. There is).
- As a whole, there are generally persuasive studies that provide potential benefits of poly urine intervention, but research specializing in Safe and Sound Protocol is still in the early stages.
Case research and online reviews are certainly promising, but the specific application of the Safe and Sound Protocol, such as the best practices, the most suitable and lon g-term impact, is still being studied. It is important to keep that in mind.

What should I know before trying the SSP?
Is the SSP on Spotify? Where do I listen?
Theoretically, many types of people can benefit from the nervous system adjustment tools like SSP. When asked about the benefits of Safe and Sound Protocol, the practitioner, Jes Jackson, answered:
[SSP] can be a major change for the nervous system that has been primed to detect threats and has not experienced much safety. In other words, you may notice changes in human relationships, borders, physical and sensory experiences, as well as changes in the reaction to sel f-defense and connection.
