The risk of smoking is well known, and there is no doubt that tobacco products should be strictly subject to strict rules and crackdowns. We have opposed regulatory measures, which seem to be extreme and lacking in effectiveness. I agree that we should keep in mind that smoking and use nicotin e-containing products should continue to regulate to encourage smoking smoking. At the same time, it is clear that millions of people will continue smoking. Combining the restrictions of no n-smoking products based on risks and further restrictions on pape r-rolled tobacco is more effective and quick than focusing only on typical regulatory measures. Some critics claim PMI’s business model is focused on smoking AND vaping, not smoking OR vaping—how do you respond to this?

It is clear that the best choice for smokers is to quit tobacco and nicotine completely. But for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke, switching completely to a scientifically proven smoke-free alternative is a better choice than continuing to smoke. We do not encourage dual use. Would you also hope that children would not take up vaping? If you believe e-cigarettes are of “minimal risk,” why not openly encourage young people to vape?

Our message on this matter is very clear. We do not want anyone, especially minors, to smoke tobacco or use smoke-free products, and we do not encourage anyone to do so. Our smoke-free products are risk-free and non-addictive. Our smoke-free products are for adults who continue to smoke or use nicotine products.

As fewer young people are taking up smoking compared to previous generations, doesn’t that mean looking far into the future that there will be fewer smokers available as potential IQOS customers?

We recognize that the World Health Organization (WHO) plays an important role in driving policies to reduce smoking worldwide. However, despite these efforts, millions of people who understand the risks continue to smoke cigarettes. According to data collected by the WHO, on average, only 2. 5% of smokers quit each year.

It is these hundreds of millions of men and women who have the most to gain from less harmful alternatives to smoking. If adults who would otherwise continue to smoke were to instead discard cigarettes and switch to less harmful alternatives, the decline in smoking rates could significantly exceed the projected cessation rates.

Many stakeholders have expressed concern about the impact of youth initiating e-cigarette products. We share this concern. The positive impact of our smoke-free products on adult smokers who do not quit should not be hindered by increased youth use of nicotine-containing products. Our marketing code is strong and enforced globally. Multiple studies have shown that youth initiation of IQOS use is low. We remain vigilant and welcome any constructive feedback.

Altria, the parent company of Philip Morris USA, invested USD 12.8 billion in a vaping product that has been widely linked to a growing percentage of U.S. teenagers using e-cigarettes. Are you going to tell me that this teen use of e-cigs “concerns” you or that PMI was encouraged by those statistics?

Philip Morris USA is a separate company from Philip Morris International. Philip Morris USA is owned by Altria and is not an affiliate of or part of the same corporate structure as Philip Morris International. Although smoke-free products appear to be less harmful than smoking cigarettes, they still contain nicotine, which is very addictive. Are you concerned that nicotine delivered through vaping could be very addictive?

Smoking cessation products do not address addiction concerns. The best option is to never start using tobacco or nicotine products. Those who have already started should quit. But if they would otherwise continue to smoke, they should switch to scientifically proven smoking cessation alternatives. These products contain nicotine, which is addictive and not without risk, but is not the main cause of smoking-related illnesses.
