The postdoctoral position will join both the Carlson lab and the Verena program, joining a network that is primarily driven by young researchers and has around 20 active trainees.
  • We are seeking a fellow to conduct research related to the mission of the Verena program. Successful candidates may propose original research or bring in existing projects, provided they are broadly relevant to quantitative models of host-virus interactions and virus emergence:

Compensation & Benefits:

Postdoc compensation and benefits will be according to Yale policies. More information about salaries and other resources can be found at https://postdocs.yale.edu/postdocs/salaries-taxes.

Application

Geographic range shifts: Species are moving, and pathogens are moving with them. We are interested in using open biodiversity datasets to measure historical and current geographic range shifts in arthropod vector (e. g. ticks, mosquitoes) and vertebrate (e. g. bats) reservoirs of emerging infectious diseases, to test hypotheses on the role of climate change and infer potential impacts on disease transmission.

Causal inference in environmental epidemiology: Human influences on ecosystems and climate account for an increasing proportion of the global disease burden. We are interested in developing statistical analyses that can estimate the specific contribution of climate and land use changes to the burden of zoonotic and vector-borne diseases, with a particular focus on emerging viruses. We are also interested in modeling vaccination and other control strategies to inform policy-relevant recommendations.

Mosquito-Arbovirus Interactions We are interested in identifying evolutionary and ecological correlates of vector competence using machine learning models, annotated mosquito and flavivirus genomes, and novel databases compiled from published vector competence experiments. This work will be conducted in close collaboration with Dr. Gregory Ebel's lab at Colorado State University to validate our predictions and potentially generate transcriptomic and proteomic datasets on mosquito innate immunity. Literature Annotation and Disease Surveillance Currently, very few wildlife disease data are registered in the FAIR database, making it nearly impossible to describe sampling gaps, including those directly relevant for public health and outbreak risk assessment. We are interested in introducing machine learning classification methods of scientific literature from climate science and using these models to map global research efforts in disease ecology and pathogen discovery. This work will be conducted in close collaboration with Dr. Timothée Poisot's lab at the University of Montreal.

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in epidemiology, ecology, or related field and have strong experience in statistical analysis and modeling. Strong candidates will have proficiency in R and/or other scientific programming languages (e. g., Python, Julia). Depending on the project, experience with:

Climate models and climate data (including methods of attribution science)

Genomic data, including genome annotations, and other multi-anomic datasets

Biodiversity data (e. g., GBIF)

Geospatial models (e. g., R-INLA) Machine learning (primarily classification and regression tree models)

Large-scale language models used in research applications (e. g., BERT)

Open science platforms (e. g., Github) and best practices

Software development (e. g., R packages)

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, and contact information for three professional references. In the cover letter, please include a description of your area of interest and previous experience, as well as at least two recent publications or preprints from laboratories that most closely align with the candidate's interests.

Yale is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. Yale values diversity among its students, staff, and faculty, and strongly encourages applications from women, people with disabilities, veterans, and minorities.

We are trying to understand the molecular logic of cell decisio n-making in the context of embryo. We are interested in the roles of genetic control and signal transmission dynamics, and the sense of information, processing, and memories of chromatin in memory. In order to study this, the signal transmitted node is controlled in a synthesis, and the flow of information is recorded by combining this approach and reading based on imaging to resolution at the molecular level. For this purpose, we use advanced imaging approaches (optical sheet 1 molecular imaging), opt generation, synthetic biology tools, and mouse embryo stem cells CRISPR/CAS9 gene editing.
